On retail trade turnover in May 2008

In comparison with April, total retail trade turnover in May 2008 has decreased by 2.4%1, according to the data of Central Statistical Bureau. Retail trade turnover of food products has slightly increased – by 0.2%. However, non-food products were sold 3.8% less than in the previous month. Decrease was observed in almost all economic activities of this group.

Compared to May of previous year, in May this year retail trade turnover has decreased by 5.1%.2 Sale of food products has decreased the most – by 5.8%. Compared to May of previous year, the turnover drop in group of non-food products comprised 4.6%.

However, there are separate groups of products where there was no drop in trade turnover. Compared to May of previous year, in May this year retail trade in furniture, lighting fixtures, household goods has increased by 4.8%, retail trade in cosmetics and toiletry – by 4.5%, retail trade of electrical household appliances, as well as of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary goods – by 2.5%.

Compared to corresponding period of 2007, in January – May 2008 total retail trade turnover has decreased by 1.9%. Retail trade of food products has dropped significantly – by 4.8%. Compared to corresponding period of previous year, retail trade of non-food products has also decreased - by 0.1%.

Compared to April, in May 2008 retail trade turnover of enterprises the main activity of which is the sale of motor vehicles, motorcycles and parts thereof has sharply decreased by - 11.8 %1, of which turnover of motor vehicles has dropped by 14.4%, but of motorcycles and parts thereof - by 3.5%.

Compared to May of previous year, the turnover drop was even larger – trade of motor vehicles has decreased by 25.9%,2 but trade of motorcycles and parts thereof has decreased by 2.5%.

Compared to the same period last year, in January – May 2008 the turnover of the economic activity has dropped by 10.1%, of which the volume of sale of motor vehicles has decreased by 14.4%2, but sale of motor vehicle parts, as well as, sale of motorcycles and parts thereof has grown by 7.4%.

In May retail trade turnover of automotive fuel continued to grow. Compared to April, it has grown by 2%1, but compared to May 2007, turnover drop is still characteristic to the economic activity – by 5%2.
