Results of the traveller survey in the 3rd quarter of 2007

The Central Statistical Bureau has carried out running survey on the persons crossed the border. Latvia residents returning from abroad and foreign travellers leaving Latvia were surveyed.

The results of the survey show that in the 3rd quarter of this year the number of foreign travellers in Latvia increased by 7.2%, compared to relevant quarter of 2006.

In 3rd quarter of 2007 foreign travellers crossed the Latvia border 1780 thsd times. From the total number of foreign visitors 67% spent less then 24 hours in Latvia. The average length of stay in our country was 1.6 days. The travellers who spent in Latvia more than day, stayed here in average 4.3 days (in 2006 - 4.5 days).

Foreign visitors mainly were residents of neighbouring countries. 36% of the total number of travellers came from Lithuania, 17% - from Estonia, 8% - from Russia, 7% - from Germany, 6% - from Sweden, 5% - from Poland, 3% - from Finland.

33% of the foreign visitors mentioned recreation as the main purpose of the trip to Latvia, 28% notified that had arrived in Latvia only in transit, 15% of all surveyed came on a visit to their friends and relatives and 10% - had made a business trip.

In the 3rd quarter of 2007 foreign visitors in our country had spend 116.8 mln LVL, 25 mln LVL or 30% more compared to the corresponding period of previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on behalf of the employer and capital investment). In the 3rd quarter of 2007 travellers on average spent 45 LVL per day, what is 11 LVL more than in the same period of previous year. The largest amounts in Latvia were spent by the travellers from Lithuania - 19.8 mln LVL, Russia - 18.2 mln LVL, Germany - 11.0 mln LVL, Sweden - 9.5 mln LVL, from Norway - 7.6 mln LVL, and from Finland 5.6 mln LVL.

33% of all foreign visitors in Latvia spent more than 24 hours. 67% of the ones who spent a night in Latvia were accommodated hotels or similar tourist dwellings, but 16% stayed with relatives or friends. 38% of the total number of overnight foreign visitors had arrived in Latvia for the first time.

Information on Latvia foreign travellers mainly got in the internet – 21%, 20% - from relatives, friends, acquaintances, 17% - within their previous visits, 12% - from tourism manuals, 8% used business information, and 6% from mass media.

Latvia residents in the 3rd quarter of 2007, returning from abroad, crossed the border 1062 thsd times, and that is 4.3% more than in the 3rd quarter of the previous year.

Similarly like in previous surveys also now Latvia travellers mainly visited neighbouring countries: Lithuania (42%), Estonia (12%), Russia (11%), as well as 6% had visited Germany. From all Latvia travellers who crossed the border returning from foreign countries in the 3rd quarter of 2007, 34% went to foreign countries for recreation, 26% visited relatives and friends, 13% had made shopping, and 12% as the main purpose of their trip has mentioned business trip. Latvia residents spent on average 4.9 days in foreign countries, what is more than in the same period of the previous year (4.1 days).

In the 3rd quarter of 2007 Latvian travellers abroad spent had spend 145.7 mln LVL, 4.1 mln LVL or 3% more compared to the 3rd quarter of 2006 (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on behalf of the employer and capital investment). It still can be observed that Latvian abroad spend more than foreigners in Latvia. In Lithuania Latvia travellers spent 29.4 mln LVL, in Germany - 15.3 mln LVL, in Russia - 12.4 mln LVL, in Italy - 11.8 mln LVL, in Spain - 5.8 mln LVL, in Turkey - 5.4 mln LVL, in Greece - 5.1 mln LVL and in Sweden 4.7 mln LVL. In European Union Member States our travellers had spent 108.3 mln LVL, but in CIS - 14.7 mln LVL.

Latvia travellers spent 28 LVL on average per day. If as the main purpose of the travel was mentioned shopping, on average per day were spent 587 LVL.

Mainly travelled people aged 25 - 44 (59% of the traveller total number). These travellers went abroad mainly for recreation – 39%, to visit friends and relatives – 23%, as well as for business -16%. Younger travellers (15 – 24 years) preferred recreation -42%, as well as to visit of friends and relatives -28%. But elder Latvian residents (aged 45 to 64) went abroad mainly to visit friends and relatives – 39%, 36% had recreational trips, and business trips – 11%, but Latvian residents aged 65 and over went abroad mainly to visit friends and relatives – 66%.
