Results of the traveller survey in 1st quarter of 2007

The Central Statistical Bureau carried out current survey on persons crossed the border. Were surveyed Latvian residents, who returned from the foreign countries, and foreign visitors, who are leaving Latvia.

The results of the survey show that in the 1st quarter of this year the number of foreign travellers in Latvia increased by 13%, compared to relevant quarter of 2006.

Totally in 1st quarter of 2007 foreign travellers crossed the Latvia border 958 thsd times. From the total number of foreign visitors 72% spent less then 24 hours in Latvia. The average length of stay in our country was 1.2 days. The travellers who spent in Latvia more than day, stayed here in average 3.5 days (in 2006 - 4.0 days).

The majority of foreign visitors came from the neighbouring countries, 37% of the traveller total number come from Lithuania, 26% from and Estonia, 7% - from Poland, 7% - from Russia, 4% - from Sweden and 3% - fro Germany.

According to the survey, 32% of the foreign travellers had arrived in Latvia only in transit. 22% of the foreign visitors mentioned holidays as the main purpose of the trip, 15% had made a business trip and 14% came on a visit to their friends.

In 1st quarter of 2007 foreign visitors in Latvia spent 50.6 mln lats, up by 8.5 mln lats or 20% on the relevant period of the previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on behalf of the employer and capital investment). In the 1st quarter of 2007 in travellers spent 45 LVL in average per day, what is 9 LVL more than in the same period of previous year. The largest amounts in Latvia were spent by the travellers from Lithuania – 5.5 mln lats, Great Britain – 5.5 mln LVL, Norway – 5.4 mln LVL, Sweden – 4.9 mln LVL, Russia – 4.7 mln. LVL, Germany – 4.4mln LVL and Estonia – 3.8 mln LVL.

28% of all foreign visitors in Latvia spent more than 24 hours. 76% of the ones who spent a night in Latvia were accommodated hotels or similar tourist dwellings, but 3% stayed with relatives or friends. 25% of the total number of overnight foreign visitors had arrived in Latvia for the first time.

Information on Latvia foreign travellers mainly got within their previous visits – 21%, 20% - from relatives, friends, acquaintances, 18% - in the internet, 12% used business information, 7% - from tourism manuals and 5% - from mass media.

Latvian travellers

Latvia residents in the 1st quarter of 2007, returning from abroad, crossed the border 643 thsd times, and that is 6% more than in the 1st quarter of the previous year.

Similarly like in previous surveys also now Latvia travellers mainly visited neighbouring countries – Lithuania (34%), Estonia (18%), Russia (11%) and Belarus (4%). From all Latvia travellers who crossed the border returning from foreign countries in the 1st quarter of 2007, 27% visited relatives and friends, 23 went to foreign countries for recreation, 15% as the main purpose of their trip has mentioned business trip, but 14% had made shopping. Latvia residents spent in average 3.4 days in foreign countries, what is slightly less than in the same period of the previous year (3.3 days).

In the 1st quarter of 2007 Latvian travellers abroad spent 97.0 mln lats, an increase of 28.7 mln lats or 42% on the previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenses on behalf of the employer and capital investments). It still can be observed that Latvian abroad spend more than foreigners in Latvia. In Lithuania Latvia travellers spent 30.3 mln LVL, in Germany – 10.5 mln LVL, in Russia – 5.7 mln LVL, in Sweden – 3.9 mln LVL, but in Estonia 1.5 mln LVL. In the countries of European Union our travellers spent 74.0 mln LVL, but in CIS – 7,2 mln LVL.

Latvia travellers spent 45 LVL in average per day. More active to stay for several days as usually were men (65%). Mainly travelled people aged 25 - 44 (60% of the traveller total number). These travellers went abroad mainly for recreation, to visit friends and relatives, as well as for business. Younger travellers (15 – 24 years) preferred recreation as well as to visit of friends and relatives, but elder Latvian residents went abroad to visit friends and relatives.

51% of Latvian travellers evaluated their trip as very good, 36% - as good, 12% - as adequate, bet 1% - as poor.
