Results of the traveller survey in 1st half of 2008

Central Statistical Bureau carried out running sample survey on travellers. Latvian residents returning from abroad and foreign travellers leaving Latvia were surveyed.

Foreign travellers in Latvia

The results of the survey show that compared to corresponding quarter of 2007 in the 1st half of 2008 the number of foreign travellers in Latvia increased by 8.7%. But in comparison with first six months of 2006 in 1st half of 2007 the number grew by 15%.

In 1st half of 2008 foreign travellers visited Latvia 2488 thsd times. From the total number of foreign visitors 70% spent less then 24 hours in Latvia. The average length of stay in our country comprised 1.4 days (in first half of 2007 – 1.2 days). The travellers, who spent in Latvia more than day, stayed here on average 4.1 days (in 1st half of 2007 - 3.6 days).

Most of the foreign travellers came from: 33% from Lithuania, 29% - from Estonia, 6% - from Russia, 6% - from Sweden, 5% - from Finland and 4% - from Germany.

Foreign travellers mentioned recreation and business trips as the main purposes of the visit.

In the 1st half of 2008, foreign travellers spent 168.4 mln lats in Latvia, up by 18% on the corresponding period of previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments). Travellers from the European Union countries spent 121.9 mln lats, but from CIS countries – 21.2 mln lats. The travellers spent on average 48 lats per day.

30% of all foreign travellers stayed in Latvia for more than 24 hours. 69% of the foreign overnight travellers were accommodated in hotels or in other accommodation establishments, but 20% stayed at their relatives or friends. 40% of the overnight visitors came to Latvia for the first time.

23% of visitors obtained information on Latvia on the Internet, 17% - from relatives, friends or acquaintances, 16% - during the previous visits, 11% - during business trips, 10% - from tourism manuals and 8% - from mass media.

The majority of foreign visitors came to Latvia by car or air transport.

Latvian travellers

In the 1st half of 2008 Latvian residents visited foreign countries 1631 thsd times, an increase of 8.4% on the same period of 2007. In the 1st half of 2007, compared to the same period of 2006, the number of visits has increased by 9.8%.

The majority of Latvian travellers visited Lithuania (30%), Estonia (20%), Russia (12%) and 8% visited Germany. Latvian travellers mentioned recreation and business as the main purpose of the trip. Latvian residents stayed abroad on average 3.8 visitor nights, which is more than in the same period of 2007 (3.2 visitor nights). Latvian travellers which stayed abroad more than one visitor night, on average spent there 8.0 visitor nights (in the 1st half of 2007 – 7.2 visitor nights).

In the 1st half of 2008, Latvian travellers abroad spent 260.0 mln lats, up by 22% on the corresponding period of previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments). The travellers spent 173.3 mln lats in the EU, but in CIS – 20.9 mln lats. The expenditures of one traveller abroad per day was 42 lats.

Majority of all overnight travellers were aged 25 – 44 years (59% of the total of travellers). Those travellers who visited foreign countries mentioned recreation, visits to relatives and friends or business trips as the main purpose of the trip. Younger travellers (aged 15 – 24 years) (15%) preferred recreational trips, as well as visits to relatives and friends. Travellers aged 45 - 64 years (23%) mostly made recreational trips, visited relatives and friends and participated in business trips. Elderly people aged over 65 years (3%) went abroad to visit relatives and friends and for recreation.

Returning from trips abroad Latvian travellers mostly used cars and air transport.
