Results of the survey of Latvian residents about the trips made in the country in 2006

The results of a survey of the Latvian population about the trips made in the 2006 conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau show that 43% of the Latvian residents had travelled for recreational purposes (to their relatives, for recreation in open air, etc), crossing the border of a city/town or the administrative district and spending on average 10.0 lats. 26% of the population preferred short recreational trips (1-3 visitor nights) spending on average 14.1 lats during one trip. 8% of the population had made long recreational trips around Latvia (4 and more visitor nights) spending on average 29.9 lats during one trip. Women constituted the majority of the recreational travellers (54%). The most typical age of the travellers was from 45 to 64 years (40%).

The majority of residents travelling for recreational purposes were accommodated in private lodgings – 91%. Most often the travellers used a car during their recreational trip – 63%.

The most popular destination of travellers in Latvia was Riga, Jūrmala and the district of Riga. Riga was the destination for 23.3% of all recreational trips, but same-day trips (without staying overnight) constituted 26.8%. 9.9% of all the short recreational trips (1-3 visitor nights) were made to Riga and 13.0% of all long recreational trips around Latvia (4 and more visitor nights).

The average length of recreational trips was 2.2 visitor nights. For the long trips the average length was 6.8 visitor nights.

2.9% of the residents aged 15-74 years have made overnight business trips within the borders of Latvia spending on average 24.9 lats per trip. The most typical age of residents going on business trips was 25–44. Most often the destination of business trips was Riga – 25%. Cars were the most often used transport vehicles – 64.2%. The average length of stay during the business trip was – 2.5 visitor nights.

In 2006 the number of short recreational trips without overnight stays in comparison with last year has increased by 17%, reaching 14449.2 thsd trips. Also the number of long recreational trips has increased by 10%, but the number of the business trips has decreased by 30%.

In comparison with the previous year the average money spent during one trip around Latvia in 2006 increased for all used modes of transport.
