On results of the survey of Latvian residents about the trips made in the country in the 1st quarter

In the 1st quarter of 2008, compared to the same period of 2007, the number of travellers in recreational trips has decreased by 14%, but, compared to the 4th quarter of 2007, it has increased by 0.4%, according to the results of the survey of Latvian residents conducted by Central Statistical Bureau. The number of travellers in business trips in Latvia in the 1st quarter of 2008, compared to the 1st quarter of 2007, has decreased by 11%, but, compared to the 4th quarter of 2007, it practically hasn’t changed.

Reasons which prevented Latvian residents from making trips were: financial conditions (36%), lack of time (20%), lack of interest (21%), other reasons (23%).

The number of recreational trips made in the 1st quarter of 2008 was 2794 thsd, of which 2245.4 thsd were same-day trips without staying overnight, 510.2 thsd were short trips (1-3 visitor nights) and 38.4 thsd were long trips (4 and more visitor nights). The number of recreational trips in the 1st quarter of 2008, compared to the same period of 2007, has decreased by 9%, but, compared to the 4th quarter of 2007, it has slightly increased (+1%).

The most popular destinations of travellers in Latvia were Riga, Riga district and Jurmala where travellers preferred same-day trips without staying overnight. Riga was the destination for 34.8% of all recreational trips, but same-day trips (without staying overnight) comprised 38.3%. 20.2% of all the short recreational trips (1-3 visitor nights) were made to Riga and 26.1% of all the long recreational trips around Latvia (4 and more visitor nights).

The average length of recreational trips was 2 visitor nights. For the long trips the average length was 7 visitor nights.

29.7% of the residents made same-day trips and during the trip one traveller on average spent 15.1 lats. 10.6% of the residents preferred short recreational trips and during a trip one traveller on average spent 17.8 lats. 1.2% of the residents preferred long recreational trips and during a trip one traveller on average spent 33.4 lats. Usually residents were accommodated in private lodgings when they made long recreational trips. Recreational trips were preferred by women (52%). The majority of travellers were aged 25-44 years.

1.4% of the residents made business trips with overnight stays in Latvia. During a business trip one traveller on average spent 41.2 lats. Men constituted the majority of business travellers – 62%. The most typical age of residents going on business trips was 25–44 years.

Cars were the most often used transport vehicle for recreational and business trips.
