Results of the survey of Latvian residents about the trips made in the 4th quarter of 2008

The results of a survey of the Latvian population conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau show that in the 4th quarter of 2008 the number of trips for recreational purposes comprised 3493.2 thsd, of which 2710.4 thsd were same-day trips without staying overnight and 782.8 thsd were long trips with staying overnight. Compared to corresponding period of 2007, the number of travellers in recreational trips around Latvia in the 4th quarter of 2008 has increased due to winter recreation opportunities (for example, skiing, ice fishing). But the number of travellers in business trips compared to the 4th quarter of previous year has remained unchanged.

Reasons which prevented Latvian population from trips were financial conditions (45%), lack of time (17%), lack of interest (12%). Other reasons were mentioned by 26% respondents.

The most popular destinations of travellers in Latvia were Riga district, Riga and Jurmala where travellers preferred same-day trips without staying overnight. Riga was the destination of 31% of all recreational trips. Same-day recreational trips to Latvian capital comprised 36% of all same-day recreational trips and 12% of all long recreational trips.

The average length of recreational trips with staying overnight was 2.3 visitor nights. For the long trips the average length was 7.0 visitor nights.

36% of residents of Latvia made same-day trips and during the trip one traveller on average spent 16.8 lats. 14% of the residents preferred long recreational trips and during a trip one traveller on average spent 22.4 lats. Usually residents were accommodated in private lodgings when they made long recreational trips. Recreational trips were mostly preferred by women (54%). The majority of travellers were aged 25-44 years.

27.3 thsd residents made business trips with overnight stays in Latvia. During business trip one traveller on average spent 36.7 lats. Men constituted the majority of business travellers – 61%. Cars were the most often used transport vehicle for recreational and business trips.
