Results of the survey of Latvian residents about the trips made in the 1st quarter of 2007

The results of a survey of the Latvian population about the trips in Latvia and abroad show that 42% of the Latvian residents had travelled for recreational purposes (to their relatives, for recreation in open air, etc), crossing the border of a city/town or the administrative district.

The most popular were same-day trips (without staying overnight). 35% of the population preferred such trips spending on average 18.6 lats. 12% of the population preferred short recreational trips (1-3 visitor nights) spending on average 19.0 lats during one trip. 2% of the population had made long recreational trips around Latvia (4 and more visitor nights) spending on average 31.6 lats during one trip. Women constituted the majority of the recreational travellers (52%). The most typical age of the travellers was from 25 to 44 years.

The majority of residents travelling for recreational purposes were accommodated in private lodgings - 94%. Most often the travellers used a car during their recreational trip – 59%.

The most popular destination of travellers in Latvia was Riga, Jūrmala and Daugavpils. Riga was the destination for 28.4% of all recreational trips, but same-day trips (without staying overnight) constituted 31.5%. 13.6% of all the short recreational trips (1-3 visitor nights) were made to Riga and 15.8% of all long recreational trips around Latvia (4 and more visitor nights).

The average length of recreational trips was 2.0 visitor nights. For the long trips the average length was 5.2 visitor nights.

1.5% of the residents aged 15-74 years have made overnight business trips within the borders of Latvia spending on average 22.9 lats per trip. Men constituted the majority of business travellers – 65%. The most typical age of residents going on business trips was 25–44 years. Most often the destination of business trips was Riga – 24.0%. Cars were the most often used transport vehicles – 55%. The average length of stay during the business trip was – 2.1 visitor nights.

78.4% of the residents had short recreational trips (1-3 visitor nights) with overnight stays in Latvia, but 20.4% went abroad. Only 1.2% travelled both in Latvia and abroad.

41.5% of the residents had long recreational trips around Latvia (4 and more visitor nights), 57.5% travelled abroad. Only 1.0 % travelled both in Latvia and abroad.

53.6% of the residents had business trips only in Latvia, 40.1% travelled abroad, but 6.3% travelled both in Latvia and abroad.
