Results of the survey on commercial gardens in 2007

04.03.2008

The Central Statistical Bureau, in compliance with the instructions of the European Parliament and Council directive 2001/109/EC of December 19, 2001 has carried out survey on orchards, with purpose to determine the production potential of some fruit tree species (apple tree and pear tree) in commercial gardens. In the result of the survey information on the plantation area of apple and pear trees, on the number and age of trees and plantation density in gardens, production of which was mainly provided for selling, was acquired.

The acquired data show that the area of apple tree commercial gardens is 1.3 thsd ha, but area of pear tree commercial gardens – 0.2 thsd ha. The total number of apple trees is more than 736.7 thsd, but of pear trees - 64.9 thsd.

The majority of commercial gardens have been established within last 9 years. Since 1999 565.8 thsd apple trees or 76.8% of the total of apple trees and 54.1 thsd pear trees or 83.4% of the total of pear trees have been planted.

Number of fruit trees by age of planting, in thousands

In 2007 3 thsd tons of desert apples and 0.2 tons of pears were harvested. It should be mentioned that some part of the new plants still are nonproductive.

Also the density of apple trees and pear trees has changed. If in gardens which were established prior to 1983 on average 207 apple trees and 209 pear trees were planted on 1 ha, then lately on average up to 922 apple trees and 457 pear trees are planted on 1 ha. It means that mainly such species are preferred which need less growing area (for example, dwarf apple trees).

For the market needs more than 87 apple tree species are grown, however 45.7% of the plant area and 56.1% of the total of apple trees make up 10 most popular species.

It must be mentioned that species which were popular about 10 years ago such as "Baltais dzidrais", sugar apple tree, rose apple tree, „Rudens svitrotais” lately are planted less. However, more than 90% of apple trees „Antonovka” are maintained in gardens which were planted at least 20 years ago.

Structure of apple tree garden area, in %

In commercial gardens about 34 pear tree species are grown, and similarly as in apple tree gardens, only 7 most poplar of them create 68% of the total of trees and 59% of the plant area.
