FOREIGN TRAVELLERS IN LATVIA


The results of the survey show that compared to corresponding period of 2008 in the 1st half of 2009 foreign travellers crossed Latvia’s border 2222 thsd times which is less by 10.7%.

From the total number of foreign visitors 73% spent less then 24 hours in Latvia. The average length of stay in our country comprised 1.2 days. The travellers, who spent in Latvia more than a day, stayed here on average 3.7 days (in the 1st half of 2008 - 4.1 days).

In its turn, 27% of all foreign travellers stayed in Latvia for more than 24 hours. 63% of the foreign overnight travellers were accommodated in hotels or in other accommodation establishments, but 26% stayed at their relatives or friends. 35% of the overnight visitors came to Latvia for the first time.

In the 1st half of 2009, foreign visitors spent 163.6 mln lats in Latvia, less by 2.8% on the corresponding period of previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments).

Most of the foreign travellers were from neighbouring countries: 39% from Lithuania, 20% - from Estonia, 6% - from Russia, 5% - from Sweden, 4% - from Germany and 4% - from Poland.

42% of overnight foreign visitors mentionedrecreation as the main purpose of the visit, 30% mentioned business trips and 19% - visit to friends or relatives.

24% of overnight visitors obtained information on Latvia on the Internet, 18% - from relatives, friends and acquaintances, 15% - during the previous visits, 13% - during business trips, 7% - from tourism manuals and 6% - from mass media.

LATVIAN TRAVELLERS

In the 1st half of 2009 Latvian residents crossed Latvia’s border 1361 thsd times when returning from foreign countries, which is less by 16.5% than in the same period of 2008.

Similarly as in previous surveys, also this time Latvian travellers visited neighbouring countries the most – Lithuania (30%), Russia (18%), Estonia (12%) and Germany (8%).

Latvian travellers stayed abroad on average 4.4 visitor nights, which is more than in the same period of 2008 (3.8 visitor nights).

In the 1st half of 2009, Latvian travellers spent abroad 199.9 mln lats, less by 23% on the corresponding period of previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments).

In the 1st half of 2009 36% of all Latvian overnight travellers crossing Latvia’s border when returning from foreign countries had gone abroad for recreation, 27% - had visited relatives and friends, 20% mentioned business as main purpose of the trip.

Majority of all travellers were aged 25 – 44 years (56% of the total of travellers) who mostly went abroad for recreation (38%), to visit relatives and friends (23%) and to do business (22%). Younger travellers (aged 15 – 24 years) preferred recreational trips (47%), as well as visits to relatives and friends (32%). Travellers aged 45 - 64 years mostly made recreational trips (28%), visited relatives and friends (30%) and participated in business trips (23%). Elderly Latvian travellers aged over 65 years mostly went abroad to visit relatives and friends (81%).
