Foreign travellers in Latvia

The results of the survey on border crossings conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau show that foreign travellers crossed Latvia’s border 5042 thousand times, and it is 6.7% more of compared to 2009.
From the total number of foreign visitors 73% spent less then 24 hours in Latvia. Visitors, who spent in Latvia more than 1 visitor night, on average spent here 3.9 visitor nights.

74% of the foreign overnight travellers were accommodated in hotels or in other accommodation establishments, but 26% stayed at their relatives or friends. 36% of the overnight visitors came to Latvia for the first time.

In 2010 foreign visitors in Latvia spent LVL 333.9 million, 3% less on 2009 (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments).

Most of the foreign travellers were from neighbouring countries: 34% of the total number of the travellers came from Lithuania, 19% - from Estonia, 7% - from Sweden, 7% - from Russia, 4% - from Germany and 4% - from Poland.

40% of overnight foreign visitors mentioned recreation as the main purpose of the visit, 30% mentioned business trips and 20% - visit to friends or relatives.

23% of overnight visitors obtained information on Latvia on the Internet, 20% - from relatives, friends and acquaintances, 16% - during the previous visits, 14% - during business trips, 7% - from tourism manuals and 6% - from mass media.

51% of the total number of foreign overnight visitors, who in 2010 crossed Latvia’s border, used air transport, 32% used road transport, 9% - sea transport and 8% - rail transport.

Latvian travellers

In 2010 Latvian residents crossed Latvia’s border 3090 thousand times, and it is 1.0% more than in 2009. On average Latvian travellers spent 4.9 visitor nights abroad.

Similarly as in previous surveys, also this time Latvian travellers visited neighbouring countries the most – Lithuania (29%), Russia (18%), Estonia (12%) and Germany (7%).

Totally in 2010 Latvian travellers spent abroad LVL 368.2 million, 10% less on 2009 (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments).

In 2010 32% of all Latvian overnight travellers crossing Latvia’s border had gone abroad for recreation, 29% - had visited relatives and friends, 20% mentioned business as the main purpose of trip.

The majority of overnight travellers (50% of total number of travellers) were at age of 25-44. Main purposes of the trip mentioned by the travellers, who visited foreign countries, were recreation (31%), visits to relatives and friends (27%) or business trips (21%). Younger travellers (aged 15–24 years) preferred recreational trips (42%), as well as visits to relatives and friends (26%). Travellers aged 45-64 years most often visited relatives and friends (31%), went on recreational trips (26%), and business trips (26%). Elderly people aged over 65 years mostly went abroad to visit relatives and friends – 74%.

At their way back home Latvian overnight travellers mostly used air transport (57%), 29% used road transport, 9% - sea transport, and 5% - rail transport.
