Foreign travellers in Latvia

Results of the survey on the 1st half of 2011 show that foreign travellers crossed the border of Latvia 2,519 thsd times, which is by 9.7% more than in the 1st half of 2010.

From the total number of foreign visitors 27% spent more than 24 hours in Latvia. The travellers who spent more than one day in Latvia, stayed here on average 3.7 days.

72% of the foreign overnight travellers were accommodated in hotels or in other accommodation establishments, but 28% stayed at their relatives or friends. 33% of the overnight visitors came to Latvia for the first time.

In the 1st half of 2011, foreign visitors spent 173.9 mln lats in Latvia, by 14% more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments).

The majority of the foreign travellers were from the neighbouring countries: 33% from Lithuania, 19% - from Estonia, 7% - from Russia, 6% - from Sweden, 4% - from Germany and 4% - from Poland.

33% of the overnight foreign visitors mentioned recreation as the main purpose of their visit, 32% mentioned business trips and 22% - visit to friends or relatives.

As compared to the first half of 2010, a notable increase (of 49%) has been recorded in the number of visitors from Russia.

24% of the overnight visitors obtained information on Latvia from the Internet, 19% - from relatives, friends and acquaintances, 16% - during the previous visits, 15% - during business trips, 6% - from mass media and 6% - from travel guides.

Out of all overnight foreign travellers who crossed the border of Latvia in the first half of 2011, 51% used air transport, 34% - road transport, 8% - railway transport and 7% - sea transport.

Latvian travellers abroad

In the 1st half of 2011 Latvian residents crossed the border of Latvia 1482 thsd times, which is by 6.3% more than in the 1st half of 2010. On average Latvian travellers spent 3.9 visitor nights abroad.

Similarly as in the previous surveys, also this time Latvian travellers mostly visited the neighbouring countries – Lithuania (28%), Russia (17%), Estonia (12%), Germany (7%) and Sweden (5%).

In the 1st half of 2011 the number of Latvian travellers to Spain, Greece, France and Italy has increased 1.5 - 2 times.

In the 1st half of 2011, Latvian travellers spent 180.2 mln lats abroad, which is by 5% more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments).

In the 1st half of 2011, 32% of all Latvian overnight travellers crossing the border of Latvia had gone abroad for recreation, 28% - had visited relatives and friends, 22% mentioned business as the main purpose of the trip.

The majority of overnight Latvian travellers (49% of the total) were aged 25-44 years. These travellers mentioned recreation (35%), visits to relatives and friends (25%) or business trips (21%) as the main purpose of the trip. Younger travellers (aged 15 – 24 years) preferred recreational trips (41%), as well as visits to relatives and friends (29%). Travellers aged 45 - 64 years mostly (30%) visited fiends and relatives, went on business trips (28%) and recreational trips (25%). Elderly people over 65 years mostly went abroad to visit relatives and friends (74%).

Returning home, overnight travellers used air transport (60%), road transport (27%), sea transport (9%) and railway transport (4%).
