Foreign travellers in Latvia

Results of the survey on the 1st half of 2010 show that foreign travellers crossed Latvia’s border 2,296 thsd times which is more by 3.3% than in the 1st half of 2009.
From the total number of foreign visitors 73% spent less then 24 hours in Latvia. Visitors who spent in Latvia more than 1 visitor night on average spent here 3.7 visitor nights.

70% of the foreign overnight travellers were accommodated in hotels or in other accommodation establishments, but 30% stayed at their relatives or friends. 37% of the overnight visitors came to Latvia for the first time.

In the 1st half of 2010, foreign visitors spent 152.9 mln lats in Latvia, less by 6.5% on the corresponding period of previous year (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments).

Most of the foreign travellers were from neighbouring countries: 35% from Lithuania, 19% - from Estonia, 7% - from Sweden, 6% - from Russia, 4% - from Poland and 4% - from Germany.

39% of overnight foreign visitors mentioned recreation as the main purpose of the visit, 32% mentioned business trips and 19% - visit to friends or relatives.
25% of overnight visitors obtained information on Latvia on the Internet, 20% - from relatives, friends and acquaintances, 15% - during business trips, 14% - during the previous visits, 7% - from mass media and 7% - from tourism manuals.

Latvian travellers

In the 1st half of 2010 Latvian residents crossed Latvia’s border 1,394 thsd times, which is more by 2.4% than in the 1st half of 2009. On average Latvian travellers spent 4.9 visitor nights abroad.

Similarly as in previous surveys, also this time Latvian travellers visited neighbouring countries the most – Lithuania (28%), Russia (19%), Estonia (11%) and Germany (8%).
Compared to the 1st half of 2009 the number of visits to Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Turkey has increased by 20%.

In 1st half of 2010 in total Latvian travellers spent abroad 171.2 mln lats, less by 14% on the 1st half of 2009 (this amount does not include travel expenses, expenditures on instructions of the employer and capital investments).

In the 1st half of 2010 32% of all Latvian overnight travellers crossing Latvia’s border had gone abroad for recreation, 28% - had visited relatives and friends, 20% mentioned business as main purpose of the trip.
40-50% of Latvian travellers who visited Norway, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Russia and Belarus mentioned visits to relatives and friends as main purpose of the trip, but of those who visited Great Britain – this number even reached 61%.

The majority of travellers (51% of total number) were aged 25-44 years. Those travellers who visited foreign countries mentioned recreation (30%), visits to relatives and friends (27%) or business trips (20%) as the main purpose of the trip. Younger travellers (aged 15 – 24 years) preferred recreational trips (44%), as well as visits to relatives and friends (26%). Travellers aged 45 - 64 years mostly visited relatives and friends (31%), made recreational trips (26%) and participated in business trips (25%). Elderly Latvian travellers aged over 65 years mostly went abroad to visit relatives and friends (68%).
