On provisional results of demographic situation in Latvia in 2010
With the help of the data of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs for the analysis of migration and civil status registers on births, deaths and marriages received from the registry authorities the Central Statistical Bureau has compiled information on demographic situation in the country. Data on 10 months of this year and their evaluation on November and December shows that the number of Latvia population continues to reduce, and at the end of 2010 this number will comprise 2 million 229 thousand or 19 thousand less than at the begging of the year. For comparison: in 2009 the number of population reduced by 13 thousand.
The number of population due to natural movement (the number of deaths exceeding births) decreased approximately by 11 thousand, and due to the international long-term migration – by 8 thousand persons. Population reduction rate during the last years has become slower, but, according to the forecasts, in 2010 this indicator will grow – 0.8%, if compared to 0.6 % in 2009.
During the time period from 2004 to 2008 a slight birth increase was observed in Latvia. In 2008 country witnessed the highest birth rates since 1994 – 23.9 thousand children were born. But in 2009 2.3 thousand children less than in 2008 were born. Also the number of births in ten months of this year (16.2 thousand) is 2.4 thousand children less than in ten months of 2009. The birth forecasts show that this year the number will be lower than in 2009 – number of births will not exceed 20 thousand.
Death rates during the last years have changed rather insignificantly. During this year death rates almost have stayed at the level of previous year – 29 thousand persons, according to the statistical data.
During the last three years the number of marriages diminished rapidly. In 2009 9.9 thousand marriages were registered, and it is 3 thousand less than in 2008, but in 2010, in turn, the reduction of the number of marriages is not so noticeable: in ten months of this year 8.2 thousand marriages were concluded, and it is 0.7 thousand less than in corresponding period of 2009.

The number of population has diminished also due to the international migration. Analysis of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs data shows that the volume of emigration also this year is growing. Already in ten months of 2010 the number of persons leaving the country (8.8 thousand) is exceeding the number of emigrants in whole 2009 (7.4 thousand), and at the end of the year the number may reach 10 thousand. But the number of immigrants this year, in turn, will comprise about 0.8 thousand less than in 2009.
