On provisional results of Agricultural Census 2010

To acquire comprehensive and topical information on situation in agriculture of Latvia, in accordance with the requirements of the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No 1166/2008 Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) in 2010 carried out Agricultural Census and Survey on Agricultural Production Methods.

Farms included in the Agricultural Census were selected from Statistical Farm Register of the CSB, considering their economic activity and specialisation. Economic activity of the farms is characterised by the standard output (SO). Unit standard output of crop or livestock production sectors is value of production obtained from one crop hectare or one livestock unit, evaluated at prices of corresponding region and converted to euro. Agricultural Census included all farms SO of which exceeds EUR 70.

In Agricultural Census 2010 91.7 thousand farms were surveyed - 86.8% of all economically active farms of Latvia managing 98.2% of utilised agricultural area (AA). As a result of the Census the information on 88.8 thousand farms or 96.9% of surveyed farms was acquired, of which 83.1 thousand or 93.8% of farms in 2010 were engaged in agricultural production or maintained land at good agricultural and environmental condition. But 5.5 thousand or 6.2% of surveyed farms, in turn, leased out or sold their land, or were not engaged in agricultural production anymore. Information on 2.9 thousand or 3.1% of farms was not obtained, because respondents were not met or refused to give information.

In 2010 in Latvia 83.1 thousand economically active farms managed 2807.1 thousand ha of land, of which 1787.2 thousand ha of utilised agricultural area. In comparison with the data of Farm Structure Survey 2007, the number of economically active farms has diminished by 26.5%, but utilised agricultural area has grown by 11.4 thousand ha or by 0.6%.

In 2010 33.8 ha of land were managed on average per farm - it is 8.3 ha or 32.5% more than in 2007. Average utilised agricultural area in one farm has increased by 36.9% - from 15.7 ha in 2007 to 21.5 ha in 2010.

Sown area of agricultural crops in economically active farms surveyed in Agricultural Census 2010 comprised 1002.8 thousand ha, of which 53.7% - cereals, 11.3% - industrial crops and 1.9% - potatoes.

Structure of area of cereals, %

In 2010 sown area on average per crop production farm constituted 21.4 ha - it is 10.1 ha or 89.7% more than in 2007. Average area of cereals per one cereal production farm comprised 19.9 ha, an increase of 6.7 ha or 51.2% if compared to 2007. Area of industrial crops on average per farm has risen by 16.9% - from 48.4 ha in 2007 to 56.6 ha in 2010. Area of potatoes on average per one potato production farm comprised 0.7 ha - growth of 0.2 ha or 50% if compared to 2007.

48.8 thousand of economically active farms in 2010 were engaged in livestock production. Average size of herd per one livestock production farm comprised 11.2 cattle, of which 4.9 dairy cows. In comparison with 2007, cattle herd per farm has grown by 2.8 animals or by 33.2%, but number of dairy cows has increased by 0.7 animals or 17.4%.

Average size of pig herd in one pig production farm comprised 20.1 animal, an increase of 5.9 animals 41.6% if compared to 2007.

Number of permanently employed in agriculture in economically active farms in 2010 constituted 183.5 thousand, a reduction of 18.1% if compared to 2007. Number of permanently employed at annual work units comprised 88.5 thousand or 16.1% less than in 2007.
