The number of people staying at accommodation establishments has grown by 10.3 % over the year

According to the latest data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), 862.3 thsd visitors stayed at Latvian accommodation establishments over the 3rd quarter of 2016, which was 10.3 % more than during the corresponding period of the previous year. As compared to the 3rd quarter of 2015, the number of nights spent by visitors has increased by 7.9 %. The average duration of a visitor's stay at an accommodation establishment was 1.9 nights.

Over the 3rd quarter 584.9 thsd foreign visitors were hosted at accommodation establishments, of whom 32.2 % were visitors from neighbouring countries – of the total number of foreign visitors 11.7 % were from Russia, 10.6 % from Lithuania, 8.1 % from Estonia and 1.8 % from Belarus.

As compared to the 3rd quarter of 2015, the number of foreign visitors has increased by 7.6 %, and the number of nights spent by them in Latvia has grown by 5.3 %. Most of the foreign visitors in the 3rd quarter came from Germany (82.8 thsd) and our neighbouring countries – Russia (68.6 thsd), Lithuania (61.8 thsd) and Estonia (47.6 thsd). There has been a significant increase in the number of visitors from the United Kingdom (of 28.6 %), the USA (of 24 %), Finland (of 22.2 %), Denmark (21.6 %), as well as Poland (of 19.6 %), Spain (of 18.1 %) and Italy (of 16.4 %). The number of visitors from Russia has remained at the level of the 3rd quarter of the previous year (a drop of 0.1 %). There were less foreign visitors from Sweden (by 12.1 %), Switzerland (by 5.2 %), Japan (by 4.7 %) and the Czech Republic (by 4 %).

Out of all the foreign visitors 71.9 % stayed in Riga, 9.4 % – in Jūrmala, 2.8 % – in Ventspils, 2.4 % – in Liepāja, 1.9 % – in Sigulda county and 1.1 % – in Daugavpils.

Over the 3rd quarter 277.4 thsd Latvian residents stayed at tourist accommodation establishments, which was 16.3 % more than during the 3rd quarter of 2015, whereas the number of nights spent has grown by 14 %, reaching 512.8 thsd.

The most popular destinations among Latvian residents were Riga (17.1 % of visitors), Liepāja (8.1 %), Jūrmala, Engure county, Ventspils (5.1 % in each of them), Kuldīga county (4.7 %) and Sigulda county (3.7 %).

Over the 3rd quarter 468.2 thsd visitors were hosted at the accommodation establishments of Riga, which was 7.3 % more than during the corresponding period of the previous year. The number of foreign visitors in Riga has increased by 7.8 %. The majority of foreign visitors who came to Riga were from Germany (14.7 %), Russia (9 %), Finland (7.5 %), Estonia (6.7 %), the United Kingdom (5.5 %), Lithuania (5.5 %) and Sweden (4.8 %).

During the first 9 months of 2016, 1.84 million guests have stayed at tourist accommodation establishments, which is 7.1 % more than during the corresponding period of the previous year. Moreover, 1.26 million foreign visitors have been hosted (an increase of 5.7 %), having spent 2.42 million nights at tourist accommodation establishments (growth of 5.5 %). In turn, the number of Latvian residents staying at tourist accommodation establishments has increased by 10.0 %, reaching 583.2 thsd, while the number of nights spent by them at the accommodation establishments has grown by 11.1 %, reaching 1.09 million.
