In the first five months this year 8656 newborns were registered in the country, which is 362 babies more than in the first five months of 2013. In May 1843 newborns were registered in Latvia.
Also the number of marriages keeps growing. In the first five months there were 2843 marriages registered in the country, which is 275 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In May 709 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 62 marriages more than in May 2013.
In the first five months of 2014, 12213 persons passed away, which is 742 persons fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year. 2429 persons deceased in May.
Natural increase in Latvia is still negative. In January - May 2014, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, the number of population dropped by 3557 people (in January - May last year - by 4461).
