In the nine months volume of freights increased by 2.1%

According to the information on freight transport compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau, in the first nine months of 2014 the total volume of freights carried in main transport sectors has grown by 2.1% as compared to January–September 2013.

In the first nine months of 2014 42.7 mln tons of the freight was carried by rail, which is an increase of 2.5% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

National freights by rail comprised 0.9 mln tons – 0.9% more than in January–September 2013. In international traffic the volume of freight carried by rail rose by 1 mln tons or 2.5%. Import freight traffic grew by 5.1%, but export freight traffic – by 0.3%. But freight traffic in transit through Latvia reduced by 36.5%. Freight traffic by rail to/from Latvian ports comprised 84.5% of international traffic and rose by 5.4%.

In the first nine months of 2014, 46.5 mln tons of the freight was carried by road, which is a rise of 0.8 mln tons (1.7%) compared to January–September of the previous year. Growth in the volume of freights was mainly determined by increase of 14% in the transportation of products of agriculture, hunting and forestry.

The bulk (81.8%) of the total freight volumes by road was national freight, where the indicator remained at the level of the previous year (increase of 0.1%). International freight traffic rose by 0.7 million tons (9.4%).

36.8% of the total volume of freights carried by road were comprised by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, 21.4% – products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products, but 11.1% – by wood and products of wood (except furniture), paper and paper products.

In the first nine months of this year by the oil products pipeline 4.7 mln tons of oil products were transported, an increase of 1.9% on the nine months of 2013.

The data compiled on passenger traffic by public transport in the first nine months of 2014 show that the total number of passengers transported has remained at the level of the previous year (reduction of 0.2%).

In the first nine months of 2014, 15.1 mln passengers were carried by rail, which is an increase of 0.6% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. 98.5% of all passengers carried by rail were carried by national transport. The number of passengers carried by national transport by rail rose by 0.9%, but in international transport the number of passengers reduced by 18.1%.

According to data provided by the State Ltd. "Road Transport Administration", in the nine months 108.4 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines – less by 1% than in the nine months of 2013.

The number of passengers carried by national transport decreased by 1%, of which in regional local routes – by 6% and in regional interurban routes – by 4.1%. The number of passengers carried in urban routes rose by 0.4%. In the international traffic the number of passengers carried comprised 0.3 mln – less by 7.2% than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

In the nine months 68.2 mln passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, which is an increase of 1% compared to January–September of the previous year. The number of passengers carried by trolleybus reduced by 0.7%, but by tramway – rose by 2.9%.
