Most optimistic people live in Kurzeme

According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia on the overall life satisfaction and its aspects in 2013, people in Latvia evaluate their overall life satisfaction on average with 6.5 points in the scale from 0 to 10. People in Kurzeme were the most satisfied - 6.9 points. In Pierīga this indicator was 6.8, in Riga - 6.4, in Zemgale and Latgale - 6.3 and in Vidzeme - 6.2 points. Couples with children were comparatively more satisfied (7.1 points). In single parent families life satisfaction indicator dropped to 6.4.

People in Latvia were satisfied with their personal relationships with relatives, friends, colleagues etc. (8.1 points), with recreational or green areas in the place of accommodation (7.5 points) and with job (7.3 points), as well as with time use (7.1 points) and accommodation (6.6 points). People were less optimistic about their household financial situation (5.0 points). In Latgale this indicator was as low as 4.6 points and in Videzeme - 4.8 points. Satisfaction with household financial situation was the highest in Kurzeme - 5.5 points.

Young people aged 16-24 were the most optimistic about the life.As compared to other age groups, young people showed the highest overall life satisfaction (7.3 points) and satisfaction with time use (7.5 points). The overall satisfaction with life and time use decreases with age. Besides, dissatisfaction with the financial situation in the household grows.

Data reveal that job seeking and inability to find one have a negative impact on the overall life satisfaction (5.3 points) as compared to the average overall life satisfaction in Latvia - 6.5 points. People who did not work and were seeking a job not only had the most negative evaluation of their household financial situation (3.4 points), but also of other aspects of life - accommodation (5.8 points), time use (6.0 points) and evensatisfaction with living environment (6.9 points). The most optimistic outlook on life was recorded among employed persons and those who neither were working, nor seeking a job, like pupils, students, housewives and similar.

*Data source: survey on income and living conditions conducted by the CSB in 2013 (EU-SILC – EU Statistics on Income and Living Conditions): well-being module, included in the survey last year. The survey respondents were asked to evaluate different aspects of their life in a ten-point scale from 0 (not at all satisfied) to 10 (completely satisfied). Within the framework of the survey 6.3 thousand households and 12 thousand persons aged 16 and over were interviewed. Data collection is available in the CSB website (ej.uz/EU-SILC_2013; chapter 7).
