According to Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia, in May 2009, compared to April 2009 manufacturing turnover1 has decreased by 4.1%, according to seasonally adjusted data2 (calculating at current prices).
Major turnover drop was in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products – by 14.9%, in manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment – by 11.6% and in manufacture of rubber and plastic products – by 11.2%.
The largest turnover increase was in industrial services (repair and installation of industrial machinery and equipment, repair and maintenance of ships and boats) – by 13.5%, in the manufacture of basic metals – by 7.4%, in the manufacture of electrical equipment – by 5.5%.
Manufacturing turnover index (2005=100)
In May this year, compared to the previous month, manufacturing turnover in domestic market decreased by 3.4%. In sectors which are oriented to domestic consumption the increase in domestic market was in the manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products – by 8.6% (consumption in domestic market – 77% of total sector’s turnover). However, there was a decrease of 1.2% in the manufacture of food products (consumption in domestic market – 80% of total sector’s turnover), in the manufacture of beverages – by 2.3% (consumption in domestic market – 73% of total sector’s turnover) and in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment (repair and maintenance of ships and boats, repair of fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment, installation of industrial machinery and equipment) – by 18.7% (consumption in domestic market – 76% of total sector’s turnover).
Compared to April 2009, in May exports volume in manufacturing decreased by 3.7%. In sectors which in general are oriented to exports had the increase volume in the manufacture of textiles – by 5.8% (exports – 80% of total sector’s turnover), in the manufacture of wearing apparel – by 2.7% (exports – 85% of total sector’s turnover), in the manufacture of wood and of products of wood, except furniture – by 2.1% (exports – 73% of total sector’s turnover). At the same time major drops in exports were in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products – by 19% (exports – 76% of total sector’s turnover), in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products – by 15.9% (exports – 90% of total sector’s turnover).
In May 2009, compared to May 2008, industrial turnover in manufacturing reduced by 29.5%, of which in domestic market – by 29.9% and in exports – by 29.1%, according to working day adjusted data.
