On main livestock breeding indicators in Latvia in 2006

The increase in production output in 2006 was on average higher than in 2005, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

In 2006 815.1 thsd tons of milk were produced and it is by 0,6% more than on the previous year. Last year continued changes in herd structure and it resulted with the decrease in the number of dairy cows by 2.8 thsd or by 1,5%, compared to 2005. The average milk yield per cow in 2006 rose by 2,9% and reached 4492 kg. The percentage share of milk sold to milk procurement and processing enterprises is growing year by year. In 2006 are purchased 592.3 thsd tons of milk or by 18.0% more than previous year. Rate of sold milk in 2006 was 72.9% from total production of the milk. . The average purchase price for milk in Latvia has increased from LVL155.20 per ton in 2005, to LVL 164.22 per ton in 2006 or by 4.9%.

In 2006 were produced 79,7 thsd tons of meat. Compared to the previous period, meat production in 2006 increased by 4%. The steepest increase was observed in the output of poultry meat, by 19.8%, also the percentage share of poultry meat in the total meat production increased and reached 25.8%. The production of beef has increased by 1.2%. But as its percentage share in the total production, in turn, decreased from 26.6% in 2005, to 25.9% in 2006. Last year the production of pig meat decreased by 1,7%. Compared to previous year, the percentage share of pig meat in the total meat production decreased to 47.4%, or by 2,7%.

Egg production continues to increase. In 2006, 552.7mln eggs were produced, 1.3% up on the previous year.

Compared to the end of the previous year, there was only a slight change in the number of cattle at the end of 2006: the number of cattle has decreased by 2.1% and that of sheep has decreased by 0.7% whereas the number of pigs has decreased by 2.6%, the number of goats by 4.0%. In 2006 in cattle herds the number of animals for breeding has increased, but in pig herds it stayed stabile in the level of 2005. Compared to previous year, in 2006 the number of poultry has increased by 9.7%.
