Main indicators of livestock farming in 2009

According to the data of Central Statistical Bureau at the end of 2009 the number of livestock has slightly changed. Compared to previous year. the number of cattle has diminished by 2.0 thsd or by 0.5%, of pigs – by 7.2 thsd or by 1.9%. But the number of goats and sheep has grown – by 3.6% or by 5.4% and by 0.3 thsd or by 2.5%, respectively.

In 2009 82.8 thsd tons of meat (in slaughter weight) were produced, and it is 3.8% less tan in 2008. Decrease was recorded in production of beef, as well as pork and poultry – by 4.2%, 4.7% and 1.3%, respectively.

The average purchase price for meat (in slaughter weight) has decreased from LVL 1149.04 per ton in 2008 to LVL 1054.98 per ton in 2009 or by 8.2%. Prices of beef and of pork diminished – by 5.4% and 10.8%, respectively, but prices of sheep meat grew by 2.3%.

The number of dairy cows continues to reduce - at the end of 2009 it decreased by 4.9 thsd or by 2.9%, if compared to the end of 2008. If compared to the year before, the volume of produced milk diminished only by 4.0 thsd tons or by 0.5%, because average milk yield from cow reached 4892 kg, and it is 70 kg or 1.5% more than a year before.

The volume of milk sold to milk procurement and processing enterprises has reduced – in 2009 595.3 thsd tons of milk were purchased, and it is 6.1% less than a year before, the share of sold milk in the total volume of milk produced has decreased by 72.0% (in 2008 - 76.2%), it is because direct sale of milk was started, and average purchase price of milk in milk procurement and processing enterprises fell under prime cost.

The average purchase price for milk has decreased from LVL 191.72 per ton in 2008 to LVL 129.23 per ton in 2009 or by 32.6%. The lowest price was recorded in 2nd quarter – LVL 112.70 per ton, i.e., 39.8% less if compared to the corresponding period of 2008, but in the second half of the year prices grew and in December reached LVL 170.64 per ton.

In production of eggs growth was observed – in 2009 681.4 million eggs were produced, and it is 13.2% more than a year before. Average egg yield from one laying hen comprised 272 eggs or 0.7% more compared to the year before. But average sale price of eggs, in turn, has diminished from LVL 5.17 per 100 eggs in 2008 to LVL 4.75 in 2009 or by 8.1%.
