Main indicators of livestock farming in 2008

Compared to the previous year number of livestock at the end of 2008 reduced, according to the data of Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia. Cattle – by 18.5 thsd or by 4.6%, pigs – by 30.7 thsd or by 7.4%, number of goats and poultry – by 0.1 thsd or 0.8% and 136.3 thsd or by 2.9%, respectively. But the number of sheep has, in turn, increased by 13.2 thsd or by 24.5%.

In 2008 86.1 thsd tons of meat (slaughter weight) were produced, an increase of 2.0% compared to 2007. In the production of pig meat and poultry meat there was a growth of 0.7% and 12.1%, respectively. But the production volume of beef has, in turn, reduced by 5.8%.

The average purchase price of meat in slaughter weight has increased from LVL 940.52 per ton in 2007 to LVL 1149.04 per ton in 2008 or by 22.2%. Prices of beef have grown noticeably – by 22.4%, as well as have the prices of pig meat – by 22.4%, but prices of sheep meat rose rather moderately – by 9.7%.

At the end of 2008 the number of dairy cows reduced significantly – by 10.0 thsd or by 5.5% if compared to the end of 2007. Last year 832.1 thsd tons of milk were produced and it is 0.7% less than in 2007. Average milk yield from cow reached 4822 kg, a growth of 186 kg or 4.0% if compared to 2007. The percentage share of milk sold to milk procurement and processing enterprises is growing year by year. In 2008 633.8 thsd tons of milk were purchased, that is 0.5% more if compared to the year before. Rate of sold milk in 2008 comprised 76.2% from total production of the milk. The average purchase price for milk has increased from LVL 183.29 per ton in 2007 to LVL 191.72 per ton in 2008 or by 4.6%. To compare milk purchase price changes during a year, it should be noted that, in the first three quarters of 2008 purchase prices of milk grew, but in the 4th quarter they witnessed rapid decrease – 21.9%, if compared to the corresponding period of 2007.

Reduction of the number of poultry in 2008 caused the egg production. 601.7 mln eggs were produced, and it is a decrease of 4.6% if compared to the 2007. Average egg yield from one laying hen was 270 eggs or 1.1% more compared to the year before. Average price of eggs has increased from LVL 4.41 per 100 eggs in 2007 to LVL 5.17 in 2008, or by 17.2%.
