Main indicators of livestock farming in 2007

According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau on 2007, there livestock production has increased.

There was only a slight change in the number of cattle at the end of 2007: the number of cattle increased by 5.7%, number of sheep – grew almost by one third, but the number of pigs and goats has decreased by 0.6% and 9.1%, respectively.

In 2007 84.4 thsd tons of meat were produced, that constitutes and increase of 5.9% compared to 2006. The most rapid increase was recorded in the production of beef – 10.1% and in the production of pig meat – by 6.9%. The production of poultry has maintained the level of the previous year.

The average purchase price for meat in live weight has decreased from LVL 627.13 per ton in 2006 to LVL 607.67 per ton in 2007 or by 3.1%. The prices of both beef and pig meat have reduced – by 2.8% and by 1.6%, respectively, but the average purchase price of sheep meet has increased by LVL 1.69 per ton or by 1.2%.

In 2007 the restructurization of the herds continued. As the result the number of dairy cows at the end of the year decreased by 2.0 thsd or by 1.1%, if compared to 2006. In 2007 841.4 thsd tons of milk were produced, that is 3.2% more compared to previous year, the average milk yield from cow reached 4.636 kg, 144 kg or 3.2% more than in 2006. The percentage share of milk sold to milk procurement and processing enterprises is growing year by year. In 2007 630.6 thsd tons of milk were purchased, that is 6.5 % more if compared to previous year. In 2007 the share of sold milk represented 75.2 % of the total volume of produced milk (in 2006 - 72.9 %), thus, the volume of milk used in the farms, i.e., to feed the cattle and for own consumption, is reducing.

The average purchase price for milk has increased from LVL 162.77 per ton in 2006, to LVL 183.29 per ton in 2007 or by 12.6 %.

Compared to previous year, the number of poultry in 2007 has increased by 6.0%. Last year 630.4.7mln eggs were produced, an increase of 14.1 % compared to the previous year. Average egg yield from one laying hen was 267 eggs or 2.2% more compared to previous year. Average price of eggs has increased from LVL 3.82 per 100 eggs in 2006 to LVL 4.42 in 2007, or by 15.7%.
