Latvian hotels and other accommodation establishments in the 4th quarter of 2009

In comparison with the 4th quarter of 2008, number of visitors in hotels and other collective accommodation establishments¹ in the 4th quarter of 2009 decreased by 23% and comprised 215.9 thsd people, according to Central Statistical Bureau (CSB). Of all visitors 35% were Latvian residents and 65% - foreign visitors. Number of foreign visitors has decreased by 17%. Mostly the number of tourists from Ukraine has decreased – by 42.4%, and from Netherlands – by 38.7%. However, the number of tourists from Russia has increased by 19.0%.

The highest share of the foreign tourists stayed in Riga – 86% and in Jurmala – 6%. The highest share of the Latvian residents stayed in Riga – 31%, Jurmala – 12% and Liepaja – 10%.

At the end of the 4th quarter 14.7 thsd rooms and 32.5 thsd beds were available in accommodation establishments.

Compared to the same period of 2008, in the 4th quarter of 2009, hotel room and bed occupancy rate in Latvia and Riga has decreased.

¹ Every month CSB carries out survey on hotels and other collective accommodation establishments which compiles information on Latvian collective accommodation establishments, excluding State specialized sanatoriums and convalescent homes, which provide health care services for State. The survey includes hotels with at least 10 rooms and other collective accommodation establishments with at least 5 rooms.
