Latvian hotels and other accommodation establishments in 3rd quarter of 2008

In comparison with 3rd quarter of 2007, number of visitors in hotels and other collective accommodation establishments¹ in the 3rd quarter of 2008 increased by 9% and reached 592.4 thsd people, according to Central Statistical Bureau. Of which 36% were residents of Latvia and 64% – foreign tourists. The highest share of the Latvia residents stayed in Riga – 22%, Riga district – 11% and Ventspils – 9%. Of all foreign tourists 66% stayed at hotels and other collective accommodation establishments in Riga. 12% of all foreign tourists stayed at hotels and other collective accommodation establishments in Jurmala.

In the 3rd quarter of 2008 496 active hotels and other collective accommodation establishments were surveyed. In the same period of 2007 400 hotels and other collective accommodation establishments were surveyed.

At the end of 3rd quarter of 2008 the number of surveyed hotels was 208 which is more by 39 hotels than in the same period of previous year.

In Riga 120 collective accommodation establishments were surveyed, of which 86 hotels, in Jurmala – 42 collective accommodation establishments, of which 18 hotels.

At the end of 3rd quarter 13.7 thsd rooms and 30.5 thsd beds were available in accommodation establishments, in the 3rd quarter of previous year 11.7 thsd rooms and 26.6 thsd beds were available.

Compared to the same period of 2007, in the 3rd quarter of 2008, excluding July, hotel room and bed occupancy rate² in Latvia and Riga has decreased.

Hotel and other accommodation establishment foreign visitors by countries

¹The Central statistical Bureau every month carries out survey on hotels and other collective accommodation establishments, in which is compiled information on Latvian collective accommodation establishments, excluding State specialized sanatoriums and convalescent homes, which provide health care services for State. The survey includes hotels where are at least 10 rooms and other collective accommodation establishments where are at least 5 rooms.

²Bed and room occupancy rates are monthly indicators.
