Latvia’s foreign trade. Main commodities and partners in 2006

The value of Latvia’s foreign trade in 2006 at current prices reached 9529.6 mln lats, an increase of 1774.4 mln lats or 22.9% compared to 2005, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

An increase in commodity exports could be observed in nearly all commodity groups in 2006 in comparison with 2005. Only those goods the percentage share of which in Latvia’s exports is rather small showed a decrease: 31.0% for mineral products, 14.5% for pulp of wood and cardboard, 14.5% for footwear, headgear, umbrellas and other articles, 12.8% for optical instruments and 11.7% for vegetable products whereas commodity imports rose in all commodity groups.

Also in 2006 commodity imports exceeded exports substantially, by 92.2%. Although it should be noted that the value of exports of wood and of articles of wood was 3.6 times higher than that that of imports.

Dispatch of main commodities from Latvia to the European Union, in millions of lats

Compared with 2005, the most significant increases in 2006 in the dispatch of goods to the EU countries were 48.8 % for the products of the chemical and allied industries, 29.5% for base metals and articles of base metals, 27.1% for plastics and articles thereof; rubber and articles thereof, 20.1% for agricultural and food products and 16.3% for articles of stone, plaster, cement, glassware and ceramic products. There were decreases in the dispatch of mineral products by 39.9% and in the dispatch of optical instruments and apparatus by 32.2%.

Main export commodities from Latvia to the CIS, in millions of lats

Compared with 2005, the most significant increases in 2006 in commodity exports to the CIS countries were 69.4% for base metals and articles of base metals, 47.6% for plastics and articles thereof; rubber and articles thereof and 32.1% for textiles and textile articles. In turn, there was a decrease of 15.9% in the exports of pulp of wood; paper and paperboard.

Arrival of main commodities from the European Union, in millions of lats

Compared with 2005, the most significant increases in 2006 in the arrival of goods from the EU countries were 66.5 % for transport vehicles, 45.3% for miscellaneous manufactured products, 34.4% for the articles of stone, plaster, cement, glassware and ceramic products, 30.7% for prepared foodstuffs and 27.1% for the products of the chemical and allied industries. There was a decrease of 6.2% in the arrival of the works of art, collector’s pieces and antiques.

Main import commodities of Latvia from the CIS, in millions of lats

Compared with 2005, the most significant increases in 2006 in the commodity imports from the CIS countries were 48.2% for base metals and articles of base metals, 38.8% for the articles of stone, plaster, cement, glassware and ceramic products and 32.1% for agricultural and food products. In turn, there were decreases of 20.0% in the imports of transport vehicles and 1.8% in the imports of wood and of articles of wood.
