Latvia is mostly visited by travellers from Lithuania and Estonia; the largest amounts of money are spent by travellers from Russia
The number of foreign travellers and their expenditure in Latvia continue to increase, according to the results of survey on the 1st half of 2013 carried out by Central Statistical Bureau. In the 1st half of this year foreign travellers crossed the border of Latvia 2.7 mln times, which is 5.2% more than in the 1st half of the previous year.
In the 1st half of this year foreign travellers spent LVL 185.1 mln (EUR 263.4 mln) in our country, which is 5.7% more than in the previous period.
The largest amounts in Latvia were spent by overnight travellers from Russia – LVL 30.7 mln (EUR 43.7 mln). Tourists from Norway spent in Latvia LVL 13.0 mln (EUR 18.5 mln), from Lithuania - LVL 10.6 mln (EUR 15.1 mln), but from Estonia - LVL 8.3 mln (EUR 11.8 mln).
Of all foreign travellers Latvia was mostly visited by travellers from Lithuania – 34.9%, from Estonia – 20% and from Russia – 9.9%, followed by travellers from Sweden – 4.9%, from Germany and Poland – 4% from each country.

The same as in 2012, on average overnight travellers stayed 4 days in Latvia. 70% of foreign travellers were accommodated in hotels or in other accommodation establishments, but 30% stayed at their relatives or friends.
Comparing the number of overnight travellers with the first half of the previous year, it is obvious that the number of travellers from Estonia increased by 31%, from Russia - by 24%, from Finland - by 14%, from Norway – by 10% and from Lithuania - by 8%.
Analyzing the main purpose of the visit of overnight travellers, 37% of foreign travellers mentioned recreation, 27% - business trip and 26% - visit to friends and relatives. As compared to the first half of the previous year, the number of travellers who mentioned visit to friends and relatives as the main purpose of the visit grew by 24%. As the main purpose of the visit travellers from Russia and Lithuania mentioned visit to friends and relatives, but travellers from Estonia and Norway – recreation.
To obtain information on Latvia, foreign travellers use different sources.27 % of all travellers obtained information from the Internet, 20% - from relatives, friends and acquaintances, 17% – during their previous visits, 14% – from travel guides and mass media.
Out of all overnight foreign travellers who crossed the border of Latvia, 48% used air transport, 38% - motor transport, 9% - railway transport and 5% - sea transport.
