On 29-31 August 2007 a course on Latvia and the European Statistical System took place in Riga (Latvia). The course was organised within the Twinning light project LV/2005-IB/FI/02TL “Introduction of Balanced Scorecard (BSC) for Assessment of Performance in the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia" and presented by Mr Kim Voldby Pedersen, Mr Jens Brodersen and Mrs Pernille Møller Pedersen from Statistics Denmark.
The aim of the course was to give an overview of the European Statistical System (ESS), including European Union (EU) procedures and principles, to create understanding of the requirements as a result of the EU cooperation, to prepare the CSB experts and enable them to tackle the day to day challenges of the EU system for the purpose of strengthening their efforts and thereby increase their influence when participating in meetings within the ESS.
In the course participated 30 experts who take an active part in the different ESS working groups, task forces and committees as well as in the Council Working Group on statistics.
The materials and handouts provided by lecturers during the course were excellent tools, which will help the CSB experts also in further work.
As the CSB experts pointed out, the interaction and learning process with knowledgeable and motivating lecturers were very useful and effective.
