Compared to 2005, the total fertility rate (the total fertility rate represents the average number of children that would be born to one woman during her lifetime if the age-specific fertility rate observed for that year would apply for her whole life.) in 2006 increased from 1.31 to1.35 or by 3.4%. For the normal exchange of the generations the total fertility rate should be 2.1-2.2 births, what was observed in Latvia in the middle of the eighties.

Total fertility rate in Latvia in 1987-2006

In 2006 per 1000 women at fertile (15-49 years) age were 38 births, what was by 2 births or 4% more than in pervious year. Since 1999 (32.7 births) this indicator is increasing. But in comparison with the corresponding data of 1987 – what were 65 births per 1000 women at fertile age - the decrease of the birth rates is noticeable.

The average age of the newborn children mothers in last 20 years has increased from 26 to 28 years, but the first babies are born to mothers aged 23 to 25 years. The age of the registration of the first marriage since 1990 has increased by 3 years, for both men and women.

Average women age at the time of first marriage and average newborn mother age at the time when first child is born in Latvia in 2000 - 2006

51.7% of the born were first children in the family (in 2005 – 51.2%), 32.1% - second children (32.0% in 2005).

In eighties more than 85% of the children were born in the registered marriages. In following years the rate of babies born in registered marriages has decreased significantly - from 83% in 1990 to 56.9% in 2006.

In 1987 in Latvia were 650 thousand women aged 15-49. The number of women at this age reduces every year and in 2000 it was 590 thousand.

As girls born in the eighties of the 20th century have reached the fertile age, the number of women at this age does not reduce further more. At the beginning of the 2007, as well as in 2000, in Latvia there were 590 thousand women aged 15-49 or 48% of the total number of the women (in comparison: in 1997 - 45%). Women aged 20-29 has the highest birth rates. The share of women in this group in the total number of the women at fertile age has increased from 27.2% in 2000 to 28.7% at the beginning of the 2007. The increase of the number of young woman, as well as the growth of the number of the marriages, promise the increase of the births also in the future.

In the five months of the 2007 in Latvia there are registered 9.5 thousand newborns (in the corresponding period of last year – 8.9 thousand). To compare the five months of both years, we could say that the number of births per 1000 residents has increased from 3.9 to 4.2 or by 7.7%.
