Latest in education statistics in school year 2010/2011
Central Statistical Bureau has compiled information on activities of professional education institutions, higher education institutions and colleges, as well as information of the Ministry of Education and Science on general schools in school year 2010/2011.
In Latvia the share of pupils and students is traditionally high, in the school year 2010/2011 it comprised 86.7%*.Still, it should be noted that during the last six years the number of persons engaged in education is reducing.

During the last years the enrolment in general schools has diminished, as has the number of pedagogical staff (including in second job). In this school year the number of pedagogical staff in schools comprises 28.8 thousand, and it is 0.6 thousand more than in previous school year, nevertheless, in comparison with the school year 2005/2006, the number of pedagogical staff has reduced by 5.6 thousand.

Enrolment in basic education programmes (grades 1-9) is decreasing year-by-year. During the last six years the enrolment in basic education has reduced by 53.0 thousand, and in this school year it comprised 174.7 thousand.
During the last two years the Ministry of Education and Science has reorganised education institutions, and as a result of that in the school year 2010/2011 the number of general schools diminished rapidly.

In the school year 2010/2011 secondary professional education is acquired by 35.8 thousand students in 83 education institutions. Similar situation is observed also in vocational education. If compared to the previous school year, the number of professional education institutions in current school year has reduced (by two schools) as has the enrolment (by 893). Since the school year 2008/2009 the number of professional education institutions has decreased by 9 institutions.

Higher education in Latvia may be acquired in 58 higher education institutions and colleges.In Latvia already for the fifth year in a row the enrolment in higher education institutions is reducing.

As the highest number of enrolees was recorded during the time period from 2004 to 2006, the number of higher education institution graduates with academic degree or qualification in 2010 has grown, i.e., 26.5 thousand students, and it is 538 graduates more than in 2009.
In the school year 2010/2011 for 34.1% of total number of the students tuition was subsided by state budget, and 65.9% were non-subsidised students. The trend emerged at the end of the 90ties, showing that the number of students, tuition of which was subsidised by state budget, started to decrease, has changed. During the last years the number of students, tuition of which is subsidised from the state budget, is growing.
