Last year yield of grain, rape, potatoes and vegetables has decreased

18.02.2014

Last year harvested production of grain comprised 1.9 million tons, and it is 175.7 thousand tons or 8.3% less than in 2012. It must be mentioned that in 2012 for the first time in Latvia’s history there was the largest harvested production of grain – 2.1 mln tons. Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau show that due to unfavourable climatic conditions average yield of cereals last year reduced from 37 quintals per hectare (ha) in 2012 to 33.4 quintals per hectare (ha) in 2013.

Size of cereal cropland comprised 583.9 thsd ha which is 9.3 thsd ha or 1.6% more than in 2012.

Compared to the previous year, sown area of spring cereals rose by 20.3 thsd ha or 7.7%, of which spring wheat – by 21.4 thsd ha or 22.2%.

Sown area of winter cereals has reduced by 11 thsd ha or 3.5%, of which rye – by 7.9 thsd ha or 21.3%, winter wheat – by 4.4 thsd ha or 1.7%.

In 2013 winter wheat had significant share both in total cereal cropland (43.3%) and in total production of cereals (54.7%). 156.4 thsd ha or 12.8% less winter wheat was harvested. Their average yield has decreased from 47.3 quintals per one ha in 2012 to 42 quintals per one ha in 2013. This impacted harvested production of grain in Latvia significantly.

In 2013 totally 1535.3 thsd tons of cereals grown in Latvia were purchased, and it is 176.1 thsd tons or 10.3% less than a year before. Wheat constituted 82.1% of the purchased grain. Their purchase diminished by 166.4 thsd tons or 11.7%, but purchase of food wheat increased by 53 thsd tons or 5.9%.

The volume of purchased rye comprised 39.4 thsd tons or 30.4% less than in 2013, of which food rye – 36.1 thsd tons or 32% less.

Exports of cereals from Latvia was significant last year. In 2013 1072 thsd tons of wheat and meslin, 24 thsd tons of rye were exported. It must be taken into account that exports of cereals of last year include yield both of 2012 and 2013.

The average purchase prices of grain in Latvia have dropped by 14.4%, which was affected by the reduction of prices in the world stock market, as there was good grain yield in the world. The average purchase prices of grain in Latvia fell from EUR 207.20 per ton in 2012 to EUR 177.30 per ton in 2013.

Sown area of rape enlarged by 10.7 thsd ha or 9.1%, which was affected by the increase of sown areas of winter rape by 13.7 thsd ha or 21.5%. As average rape yield per one ha reduced from 25.8 quintals in 2012 to 23.1 quintal in 2013, of which winter rape – from 32.1 quintal to 26.8 quitals, total rape production dropped by 6.8 thsd tons or 2.2%.

With the decrease of sown area of potatoes by 3.2% and the average yield of potatoes by 4.7%,  43 thsd tons or 8% less potatoes were harvested as compared to the previous year.

In 2013 140.4 thsd tons of vegetables were grown (including vegetables in greenhouses), and it is 20.9 thsd tons or 13% less than a year before. The open field vegetable areas grew by 4.8%, while the harvested production of vegetables decreased by 21.3 thsd tons or 14.5%, and the average yield per 1 ha declined from 182 quintals in 2012 to 149 quintals in 2013.
