On Labour Force Survey results in the 4th quarter of 2012


Results of the Labour Force Survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau show that, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the number of active population (aged 15-74), in the 4th quarter of 2012, has increased by 1.5%. Two thirds (66.5%) of the population in this age group were economically active; this indicator comprised 71.5% among men and 62.1% among women.

Number of employed persons and their share in the total population during the reference quarter has grown, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Totally in the country there were 902.3 thousand employed persons, i.e., 57.3% of the total population aged 15-74 (in the 4th quarter of 2011 - 876.7 thousand persons and 55.0%, respectively). Only 4.4% of them did not work due to various reasons (vocation, illness, childcare leave, etc.). The number employed persons includes 5.9 thousand persons, which still having the status of unemployed during the reference week were employed.

Women in the total number of employed constituted slightly higher share than men - 50.9% and 49.1%, respectively.

The livelihood of the population usually comes from various sources of income, and thus, during the survey, respondents indicated several sources of income. For slightly more than a half (51.1%) of the population in the corresponding age group main source of income was wages and salaries.

Share of employees receiving minimum monthly wage or less has reduced, whereas slight rise was recorded in the wage groups over LVL 300.

Number of unemployed persons (aged 15-74), in the 4th quarter of 2012, comprised 144.6 thousand persons - 10.4 thousand persons less, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The share of unemployed persons in the total active population comprised 13.8% (15.0% a year ago).

In the 4th quarter of 2012, the share of unemployed men in the total number of active men in the country was higher than share of unemployed women in the number of active women, constituting 15.5% and 12.1%, respectively.

Registered unemployment rate in the country in the 4th quarter of 2012 comprised 10.7%, according to the data calculated on the basis of the State Employment Agency information.

Share of the young unemployed persons (aged 15-24) in the total active young people, in the 4th quarter of 2012, accounted for 21.6% - 6 percentage points less, in comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year. Survey data show that part of young people, who were seeking job, have found it.

Long-term unemployed constituted slightly more than a half (77.8 thousand or 53.8% persons) of the total number of unemployed. Compared to the corresponding period the year before, their number has reduced by 2.3 thousand. In current economic situation, the number of unemployed persons having previous work experience is still high. In the 4th quarter of 2012, there were 129.2 thousand unemployed having previous work experience or 89.3% of the total number of unemployed, while a year before this indicator comprised 134.7 thousand persons and 86.9%, respectively.

In the 4th quarter of 2012, there were 527.2 thousand inactive persons (aged 15-74), and, if compared to the corresponding period of previous year, their number has diminished by 6.5%.

Particular attention in this group should be given to the persons who are potential unemployed, but have been discouraged or do not know where and how to find a job. Results of the survey show that, during the reference quarter, there were 31.9 thousand persons in the country who were discouraged to find a job (6.1% of the total inactive population). In comparison with the 4th quarter of 2011, their number has decreased by 5.6 thousand.
