Job vacancies in 3rd quarter of 2007

At the end of 3rd quarter there were 20.5 thsd job vacancies in the country, according to the data of Central Statistical Bureau. Compared to the data of 2nd quarter the number of job vacancies has decreased by 0.6 thsd or by 2.8%. During this period the highest decrease of job vacancies was observed in manufacturing – by 0.3 thsd job vacancies, in the health care and social care, as well as in construction – by 0.2 thsd job vacancies in each field.

In the public sector number of job vacancies has increased by 0.3 thsd, of which in budgetary institutions this number has increased by 0.3 thsd, but in central and local government commercial companies – by 0.6 thsd. Compared to the end of the second quarter of this year, the number of job vacancies in private sector has reduced by 1.0 thsd.

Compared to the 3rd quarter of previous year, the number of job vacancies in the country has not changed noticeably. Still it should be mentioned that in the public sector this number has grown by 1.7 thsd job vacancies or by 18.0%, but decreased in the private sector - by 1.8 thsd vacancies or by 16.0%.

At the end of the 3rd quarter of this year the rate of job vacancies vas higher in the public sector – 3.5% (11.3 thsd vacancies), but lower in the private sector – 1.3% (9.4 thsd).

In breakdown by kind of activity the highest rate of job vacancies was in public administration and defence; compulsory social insurance with 5.3% (4.5 thsd job vacancies) followed by transport, storage and communication with 3.3% (3.0 thsd) and manufacturing with 2.5% (4.0 thsd).

Compared to the 3rd quarter of previous year, the number of job vacancies in the 3rd quarter of this year mostly increased in public administration and defence; compulsory social insurance – by 0.3 thsd vacancies. But the most noticeable decrease of job vacancies was in manufacturing – 0.8 thsd vacancies, in the health care and social care, as well as in trade – by 0.3 thsd vacancies in each economic activity.

In breakdown by occupational groups the bulk of the job vacancies were among the craft and related trades workers – 4.1 thsd or 19.5% of all job vacancies, as well as among professionals - 3.7 thsd or 17.9%, respectively, and technicians and associate professionals – 3.1 thsd or 15.0%.

An analysis of data by region shows that the highest rate of vacancies at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2007 was in Riga (2.5%) and the Pieriga region (2.0%). In Riga there were 14.5 thsd job vacancies or 70% of all vacancies. The lowest rate of job vacancies was in Latgale and Vidzeme region (1.0% in each of the regions).

Within the private sector, the highest rate of job vacancies was in the Pieriga region (2.0%) while in the other regions it ranged from 0.9% to 1.3%.

Explanations

In accordance with the survey methodology, job vacancy is defined as a post for which no contract has been signed and no candidate chosen and the employer is taking active steps to find a suitable candidate from outside the enterprise, and which will be filled immediately or within 3 months. The rate of job vacancies is calculated in per cent, by dividing the number of job vacancies by the total number of posts (occupied + vacant).

The public sector includes central and local government institutions and commercial companies with central or local government capital participation 50% and over, public organisations and commercial companies thereof. Information in this report is shown excluding public organisations and commercial companies thereof

Information by kind of activity has been compiled by the main kind of activity of the commercial company, individual merchant or institution.

Information by regions, cities and districts has been compiled according to the location of the commercial company, individual merchant or the office of the institution.
