In January, retail trade turnover grew by 3.7 %

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to January 2016, total retail trade turnover in January 2017 rose by 3.7 %. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 0.1 %, whereas turnover of retail trade in non-food products grew by 5.9 %.

The most significant turnover growth in the non-food product group was recorded in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 12.5 %), as well as in retail sale of information and communication equipment (of 10.6 %). In turn, the largest drop in turnover was experienced in retail sale via stalls and markets (of 14.2 %) and in non-specialised stores with non-food products predominating (of 2.6 %). Turnover of retail sale in automotive fuel has increased by 8.8 %.

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 8.4% (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to December 2016, the total retail trade turnover in January 2017 increased by 2.4 % (according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices). Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 4.4 %, while turnover of retail trade in non-food products increased by 1.1 %.

Growth in turnover was recorded in retail sale of information and communication equipment (of 13.8 %), in non-specialised stores with non-food products predominating (of 8.1 %), in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 5.3 %), in retail sale of hardware, paints and glass (of 2.5 %), as well as in retail sale of automotive fuel (of 1.2 %). In turn, a drop in turnover was experienced in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (of 11.0 %), in retail sale via stalls and markets (of 7.3 %), as well as in retail sale of pharmaceutical and medical goods (of 2.1 %).

Compared to December 2016, the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) decreased by 18.0 % in January 2017. A year before – in January 2016, compared to December 2015 – the turnover decreased by 20.0 %.
