In January 2007 Internet was used by 84% of enterprises with the number of employees of 10 and more

The survey[1] on the usage and e-commerce of information and communication technologies among enterprises carried out by the Central Statistical Bureau shows that in January 2007 93% of enterprises with the number of employees 10 and more used computer in business activities, but the Internet was used by 84% of enterprises.

However, in the group of enterprises with the number of employees 50 and more computer in business activites was used by 99%, but the Internet- by 97%.

One of the main means of communication with customers is home page of an enterprise. In January 2007 the rate of enterprises having home pages reached 38%, which is a5 percentage point increase compared to January 2006.

As one of the indicators characterising the development of information society the rate of enterprises having broadband Internet connection must be mentioned. The broadband connection2 ensures better speed of the data transmission and access to the Internet in the online mode, therefore, it is very important factor in the usage of services on the Internet. In January 2007 55% of enterprises had access to the broadband connection. The data of the survey show- larger enterprises use broadband connection to the Internet more often than small and medium enterprises. For example, in the enterprise group with the number of employees 250 and more 80.4% used broadband technologies.

Enterprises most often used Internet for banking and finance services– 76%, market research – 47%, and the education and training– 32%.

The usage of the Internet falicitates the interaction with central and local government institutions. In 2007 44% of enterprises used the Internet to interact with central and local government institutions. During the last two years this indicator increased by 5 percentage points per year.

One of the kinds of Internet use is buying and selling of goods and services online, i.e. electronic commerce (e-commerce). During 2006 13% of enterprises have bought goods or services on the Internet, but only 3% of enterprises used the Internet to sell goods or services online.

It must be mentioned that in 2006 the rate of purchases online was only 2.2% of the total volume of goods and services purchased, but the sales of goods and services on the Internet was 1.4% of the total turnover.

In December also a data collection „Information society in Latvia” will be published.
