Volume index of manufacturing
(2005=100)

Compared to July 2009 industrial production volume in August 2009 has grown by 2.6%, according to seasonally adjusted data2 at current prices. Of which in mining and quarrying – by 12.6%, in manufacturing – by 2.5%, but in electricity and gas supply – by 1.4%. Most notable growth was recorded in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations – 54.9%, in the manufacture of other transport equipment (building of ships and boats, manufacture of railway locomotives and rolling stock) – 41.4%, and in manufacture of parts of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers – 20.6%. But most significant reduction was observed in publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media – 11.6%, in manufacturing of machinery, mechanisms, and equipment –10.4%, and in manufacturing of beverages – 9.8%.

Compared to July growth in selected economic activities in August of this year was influenced by the employee’ annual leaves in July, it influenced the volume of goods produced. It was observed, e.g., in manufacture of pharmaceutical goods and in manufacture of parts of motor vehicles. But growth of orders caused the increase of industrial production volume in manufacture and repair of boats, in manufacture of chemicals, there, rise was observed in manufacture of biogas, as well as in wood-processing, and there, in turn, mostly volume of manufacture of sawn timber grew.

Compared to August of previous year industrial production output in August 2009 has reduced by 12.5%, according to working day adjusted data at constant prices, of which in manufacturing – by 13.2%, in electricity and gas supply – by 12%. But in mining and quarrying there was an increase of 9.5%.

Most notable decrease of industrial production output was recorded in manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. – 66.1%, in the manufacture of other transport equipment (building of ships and boats, manufacture of railway locomotives and rolling stock) – 46.2%, and in the manufacture of parts of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers – 43.3%. But growth, in turn, was recorded in the manufacture of wood and cork articles, except furniture –24.9%, in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products – 12%, and in manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products – 2.8%.

_________

1 Data are compiled on economically active enterprises, which in industrial production employ 20 and more persons, or in which industrial turnover previous year exceeded LVL 300 thsd.
Industrial production volume in accordance with the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities NACE 2.rev. includes Mining and quarrying, Manufacturing and Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, except steam and air conditioning supply.

2 The influence of varying number of working days in the month and factors of seasonal repetition, i.e., seasonal fluctuations of goods produced in selected economic activities, has been eliminated.
