Indicators of transport in 2010

49.16 mln tons of freights were carried by rail in 2010, a decrease of 8.4 % compared to 2009, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

National freights by rail comprised 1.26 mln tons - 36.4 thsd tons (2.8%) less than in 2009. But international freights carried by rail constituted 47.9 mln tons – reduction of 4.48 mln tons (8.5%). 81.5 % of the total international freight haulage was accounted for by transportation through Latvian ports.

In 2010 freights carried by road formed 46.81 mln tons, and it is 23.8% more than in 2009.

Most part (83.8% or 39.21 mln tons) of total volume of freights were national freights, which grew by 7.61 mln tons (24.1%). International freights rose by 22.1% - 7.6 mln tons of freights were transported.

In 2010 33.4 % (15.64 mln tons) of the total volume of freights carried by road were comprised by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, 24.8 % (11.61 mln t) – products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products, but 12.6 % (5.92 mln tons) – by wood and products of wood and cork (except furniture), pulp, paper and paper products.

The freights transported by road are in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward. 30.75 mln tons of freights were transported in transport for hire or reward, an increase of 29.2 % on 2009. In transport on own account – 16.06 mln tons of freights (an increase of 14.5%) were transported.

In 2010 5.64 mln tons of oil products were transported by the oil products pipeline, a rise of 49.4% on 2009.

Compared to 2009, passenger transportation by public transport in 2010, continued to decrease.

Passenger transport by quarter and by mode of transport (mln passengers)

In 2010 20.86 mln passengers were carried by rail, and it is a decrease of 3.2 % if compared to the previous year. Number of passengers in national transports diminished by 3.5%, but in international transport (mainly between Latvia and Russia) the number grew by 13.1%.

In 2010 124.66 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, and it is a decrease of 13.6 % if compared to 2009. The majority of these passengers (99.7 %) were carried by the national bus traffic. The number of passengers in national transports has reduced by 13.5%, but in international transport – by 22.8%.
