56.1 mln tons of freights were carried by rail in 2008, an increase of 7.5 % compared to 2007, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

Compared to previous year volume of national freights by rail has decreased by 15.6% and comprised 1.7 mln tons. However, in international transportation by rail in 2008 54.4 mln tons of freights were transported – 8.4 % more compared to 2007. 80.7 % of the total international freight haulage was accounted for by transportation through ports.

In 2008 freight transport by road has decreased – 54.5 mln tons of freights were transported, and it is 9.15 less if compared to the previous year.

The bulk (85 %) of the total volume of freight was carried by the national transport totalling 46.3 mln tons of freight, a decrease of 10.2 % on 2007. Compared to the previous year international freight transportation by road in 2008 has decreased by 2.5 % - 8.2 mln tons of freight were carried.

43.5% (23.7 mln t) of the total volume of freights carried by road comprised metallic ore and other products of mining and quarrying and peat, 14.1% (7.7 mln t) – products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishery products, but 7.5% (4.1 mln t) - food products, beverages and tobacco products.

The freights carried by road are in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward. In 2008 37.8 mln tons of the freights were carried for hire or reward, a decrease of 5 % compared to the previous year. But 16.7 mln tons of freights, in turn, were carried in transport on own account, a decrease of 17.2 % on 2007.

In 2008 5 mln tons of oil products were transported by the oil products pipeline, a reduction of 22.5 % on the previous year.

Passenger transportation in public transport has also reduced.

In 2008 26.8 mln passengers were carried by rail, and it is a decrease of 2.4% if compared to the previous year. Compared to 2007 the number of passengers in national transport has reduced by 2.4%, and in 2008 this number comprised 26.4 mln passengers. But in international transport by rail the number of passengers has diminished by 5.7%.

In 2008 183.4 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, and it is a decrease of 5.7 % if compared to the previous year. The highest number (99.7%) of the passengers carried by regular bus traffic lines used national transport – a reduction of 5.7%, but the number of passengers in the lines of international buses has decreased by 6.5%. It should be noted that, the number of regular bus traffic line routes in 2008 was reduced by 5.7%.

In 2008 166 mln passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, a decrease of 9.6% compared to 2007. The number of passengers carried by trolleybus lessened by 11.7%, but by tramways – by 7.6%.
