25.5 mln tons of freight were carried by rail in 1st six months of 2007, a decrease of 0.1% compared to 1st six months of 2006, according to the Central Statistical Bureau. The national freight haulage by rail accounted for 0.9 mln tons of freight, a decrease of 19.8% on January – June 2006. International freight transportation by rail totaled 24.6 mln tons, up by 0.8% on the 1st six month of 2006. 77.6% of the total international freight haulage was accounted for by transportation through ports.18.4 mln tons of freight were transported by rail to ports, an increase of 2.2% compared to 1st six months of 2006. By contrast, freight carried by rail from the ports has increased by 8.2% in comparison with the 1st six months of previous year and represented 0.7 mln tons of freight.

In 1st six months of 2007 the number of freights carried by road increased. 29.4 mln tons of freight were carried by road in the 1st six months of 2007, which is an increase of 5.3 mln tons or 22% compared to 1st six months of 2006. The bulk (86.1%) of the total volume of freight was carried by the national transport totaling 25.3 mln tons of freight, an increase of 20.4% on the 1st six months of 2006. Significantly have increased international road transportation. 4.1 mln tons of freight were carried by international road transport in first six months of 2007 and this is by 33.5% more than in the relevant period of previous year. Of the freight carried by international road transport the highest increase was in the volume of import freight carried. The volume of import freight carried by road in 1st six months of 2007 was 1.4 mln tons, what is more by 57.9% compared to 1st six months of previous year. The volume of exported freight haulage in the first six months of 2007 was 1.8 mln tons, up by 17.9% of the 1st six months of 2006. Also, the volume of freight carried in foreign countries by the lorries registered in Latvia has increased. In 1st six months of 2007 0.9 mln tons were carried in foreign countries by the lorries registered in Latvia, an increase of 36.9% of the corresponding period of previous year.

The freights carried by road are in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward.

In the 1st six months of 2007 the volume of freights for hire or reward reached 70.8% from the total number of freights by road. In January – June 2007 20.8 mln t of the freight was carried for hire or reward, which is 1.5 times more on the corresponding period of the previous year. The bulk of this freight (81.5%) was carried by the national transport.

In the 1st six months of 2007 29.2% of the freight was carried by road for own account. Totally it comprised 8.6 mln tons freight, what is 15.9% less than in January – June of 2006. Of the total own account freight haulage, 97.4% were carried by the national transport.

In the August 2006 the oil transporting by oil pipeline was fully stopped. But the volume of oil transported by oil pipeline increased in the first six months of 2007, however, in the 2nd quarter of 2007 there was a decrease in the transportation of oil products. By the oil products pipeline in first six months of 2007 were transported 3.5 mln tons of oil products, an increase of 1% on the corresponding period of previous year.

In January – June 2007 the number of passengers carried by rail increased. In first six months of 2007 13.2 mln passengers were carried by rail, 5.7% up on the 1st six months of 2006. The increase of passengers carried by rail was determined by the increase of passengers carried by rail both in national transport and international transport. 13 mln passengers were carried by the national rail transport, an increase of 5.6% compared to the 1st six months of 2006. 0.2 mln passengers were, in turn, carried by the international rail transport, up by 8.3% compared to 1st six months of previous year.

Compared with the 1st six months of 2006, passenger transport by road in 1st six months of 2007 decreased. In January-June 2007 regular bus traffic lines carried 100.3 mln passengers, down by 5.5% compared to 1st six months of 2006. The majority of these passengers (99.7%) were carried by the national bus traffic. Compared to 1st six months of 2006, the number of passengers carried by the national bus transport has decreased by 5.4%. The majority (77.1%) of the total number of passengers carried by the national bus transport was carried by urban bus routes. Compared to the January – June of 2006, in 1st six months of 2007 the passenger transportation by international bus decreased by 18.1%.

In January-June 2007 86.6 mln passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, a decrease of 8.8% on 1st six months of 2006. 44.3 mln passengers were carried by tram; down by 6% on 1st six months of 2006 and 42.3 mln passengers were carried by trolley bus, comprising a decrease of 11.5 %.
