Indicators of transport in the 1st quarter of 2009

14.2 mln tons of freight were carried by rail in the 1st quarter of 2009, a decrease of 1.1% compared to 1st quarter of 2008, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

Compared to the 1st quarter of previous year volume of national freights by rail has decreased by 12.9% and comprised 0.3 mln tons. However, in international transportation by rail in the 1st quarter of 2009 13.9 mln tons of freights were transported – 0.8% less compared to the 1st quarter of 2008. 86% of the total international freight haulage was accounted for by transportation through ports.

In the 1st quarter of 2009 freight transport by road has decreased – 7.3 mln tons of freights were transported, and it is 40.2% less if compared to the 1st quarter of previous year.

The bulk (82.1%) of the total volume of freight was carried by the national transport totalling 6 mln tons of freight, a decrease of 41.1% on the 1st quarter of 2008. In the 1st quarter of 2009, compared to the same period of previous year, international freight transportation by road have decreased by 35.8% - 1.3 mln tons of freight were carried.

In the 1st quarter of 2009 23.3% (1.7 mln tons) of total freight transport by road were comprised by products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products, 19.5% (1.4 mln tons) – by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, but 18.1% (1.3 mln tons) – by wood and products of wood and cork (except furniture), pulp, paper and paper products, printed matter and recorded media.

The freights carried by road are in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward. In the 1st quarter of 2009 4.1 mln tons of the freight was carried for hire or reward, which is a decrease of 51.5% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. 3.2 mln tons of freights were carried in transport on own account, a decrease of 14.7% on the 1st quarter of 2008.

The volume of oil transporting by oil pipeline has decreased. In the 1st quarter of 2009 by the oil products pipeline 1.5 mln tons of oil products were transported, a decrease of 2.9% on the corresponding period of previous year.

In the 1st quarter of 2009, compared to the first three months of 2008, passenger transportation in public transport has reduced.

In the 1st quarter of 2009 5.6 mln passengers were carried by rail, which is a decrease of 5.7% compared to the 1st quarter of the previous year. Compared to the same period of previous year, the number of passengers in national transport has reduced by 5.5%, but in international transport by rail the number of passengers has diminished by 20%.

In the 1st quarter of 2009 40.6 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is a decrease of 11.8% compared to the 1st quarter of the previous year. The majority of these passengers (99.8%) were carried by the national bus traffic. The number of passengers in national transport, compared to January - March 2008, has decreased by 11.8%, but the number of passengers in the lines of international buses has decreased by 16.7%. It should be noted that, the number of regular bus traffic line routes in the 1st quarter of 2009 was reduced by 7.8%.

In the 1st quarter of 2009 38.7 mln passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, which is a decrease of 14.2% compared to the 1st quarter of the previous year. The number of passengers carried by trolleybus dropped by 12.7%, but by tramways – by 15.6%.
