The bulk (83.4 %) of the total volume of freights was carried by the national transport totalling 10.2 mln tons of freights, an increase of 11.9 % if compared to the 1st quarter of 2007. Significantly have increased international road transportation. In 1st quarter of 2008 2.1 mln tons of freight were carried by international road transport, an increase of 9.7 % compared to corresponding period of previous year.

The freights by road are carried in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward. In 1st quarter of 2008 8.5 mln tons of the freights were carried for hire or reward, an increase of 4.2 % compared to the 1st quarter of previous year. In transport on own account – 3.8 mln tons, in comparison with 1st quarter of 2007, it constitutes an increase of 32.8%.

Freight transport by mode of transport (mln t)

In 1st quarter of 2008 1.6 mln tons of oil products were transported by the oil products pipeline, a decrease of 17.4 % on the 1st quarter of previous year.

Compared to 1st quarter of previous year, the number of passengers carried by rail in the 1st quarter of 2008 has decreased. This mode of transport was used by 5.9 mln passengers, a decrease of 3.2% on 1st quarter of previous year. Compared to the 1st quarter of previous year, the number of passengers carried by international rail transport has decreased by 18.9% and constituted 0.1 mln passengers. Compared to 1st quarter of 2007, the number of passengers carried by domestic traffic has decreased by 3%, and in the 1st quarter of 2008 it comprised 5.8 mln passengers. As most of the passengers use rail transport to move from one Latvia region to another, decrease of the passenger number possibly is related to the slow-down of the economic development in Latvia in the 1st quarter of this year.

Compared to corresponding period of previous year, passenger transport by road in 1st quarter of 2008 has decreased. The passenger transportation by international buses has decreased by 6.6 %. Regular bus traffic lines carried 46 mln passengers, decrease of 10.1 % compared to 1st quarter of 2007. The majority of these passengers (99.8 %) using regular bus traffic were carried by the national bus traffic. Compared to 1st quarter of 2007, the number of passengers carried by the national transport has decreased by 10.1 %. The decrease in the number of passengers in the lines of district and long-distance busses noticeably is related to already mentioned slow-down of economic development, and that, in turn, was the reason why trips were not made and were cancelled. E.g., in the lines of long-distance busses in the 1st quarter of this year 506 runs were cancelled, but in the lines of district busses – 1024 runs.

In the 1st quarter of 2008 44.9 mln passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, a decrease of 8.6 % on 1st quarter of 2008. From experience it may be concluded that increase of the traffic tariffs (in January of this year in Riga, where 90% of the total number passengers carried by urban electrified transport were transported, the tickets in trams and trolleys increased by 33%) is directly related to the decrease in the number of passengers. Also the problem concerning the passengers travelling without tickets is topical.
