Indicators of transport in the 1st half-year of 2008

27.8 mln tons of freight were carried by rail in the 1st half of 2008, an increase of 9.3% compared to 1st half of the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

In six months of 2008 in international transportation by rail 27.0 mln tons of freights were transported – 9.9% more compared to the January – June 2007. 79.2% of the total international freight haulage was accounted for by transportation through ports. By contrast, the volume of national freight carried by rail has decreased by 9.7% in comparison with the January - June of previous year and represented 0.8 mln tons of freight.

In the 1st half of 2008 freight transport by road has decreased – 26.2 mln tons of freight were transported which is 3.0 mln tons or 10.3% less than in the 1st half of previous year.

The bulk (84.3%) of the total volume of freight was carried by the national transport totalling 22.1 mln tons of freight, a decrease of 12.1 % on the 1st half of 2007.

In the 1st half of 2008, compared to the same period of previous year, international freight transportation by road have increased by 0.9% - 4.1 mln tons of freight were carried.

The freights carried by road are in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward. In the 1st half of 2008 18.9 mln tons of the freight was carried for hire or reward, which is a decrease of 9 % compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. In its turn, 7.3 mln tons of freights were carried in transport on own account, a decrease of 13.4% on January – June of 2007.

In January-June of 2008 by the oil products pipeline 2.9 mln tons of oil products were transported, a decrease of 15.8% on the corresponding period of previous year.

Compared to the 1st half of previous year, the number of passengers carried by rail in the 1st half of 2008 has decreased by 3.5%. This mode of transport was used by 12.7 mln passengers. In the 1st half of 2008, compared to the 1st half of previous year, the number of passengers carried by domestic traffic has decreased by 3.4% comprising 12.5 mln passengers. The number of passengers carried by international rail transport has decreased by 12.9% compared to the 1st half of previous year, and constituted 0.2 mln passengers.

Compared to the 1st half of 2008, passenger transport by road in the same period of 2007 has decreased. In January-June of 2007 regular bus traffic lines carried 94 mln passengers, down by 6 % compared to six months of 2007. The majority of these passengers (99.7%) were carried by the national bus traffic. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2007, the number of passengers carried by the national bus transport has decreased by 6%. The decrease in the number of passengers in the lines of international buses has decreased by 7.7% compared to the same period of previous year.

In the 1st half of 2008 86.9 mln passengers were carried by urban electrified transport, which is a decrease of 8.2% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
