Indicators of transport in the 1st half of 2010

25.3 mln tons of freight were carried by rail in the 1st half of 2010, a decrease of 10.3% compared to 1st half of the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

Compared to the same period of previous year, volume of national freights by rail has decreased by 42.1 thsd t (7%) and comprised 0.6 mln tons. In its turn, in the 1st half of 2010 in international transportation by rail 24.7 mln t of freights were transported or less by 2.8 mln t (10.3%) compared to the 1st half of 2009. 83.8% of the total international freight haulage was accounted for by transportation through Latvian ports.

 In the 1st half of 2010 freight transport by road has reached 20.5 mln tons of freights, and it is 32.4% more if compared to the 1st half of 2009.

The bulk (82.9%) of the total volume of freight was carried by the national transport totalling 17 mln tons of freight, rise of 4.3 mln t (34.4%) on the 1st half of 2009. In the 1st half of 2010, compared to the same period of previous year, international freight transportation by road has increased by 23.5% - 3.5 mln tons of freight were carried.

 In the 1st half of 2010 28.9% (5.9 mln tons) of the total volume of freights carried by road were comprised by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, 26.6% (5.5 mln t) – products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products, but 14.1% (2.9 mln tons) – by wood and products of wood and cork (except furniture), pulp, paper and paper products.

The freights transported by road are in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward. In the 1st half of 2010 13.4 mln tons of the freight was carried for hire or reward, which is an increase of 46.2% compared to January-June of the previous year. 7.1 mln tons of freights were carried in transport on own account, an increase of 12.3% on the 1st half of 2009.

In the 1st half of 2010 by the oil products pipeline 3 mln tons of oil products were transported, rise of 24.4% on January-June of previous year.

In the 1st half of 2010, compared to the first six months of 2009, passenger transportation in public transport continued to reduce.

In the 1st half of 2010 10.1 mln passengers were carried by rail, which is a decrease of 10.2% compared to the 1st half of the previous year. Compared to the same period of previous year, the number of passengers carried by the national transport has decreased by 10.5%, but in international traffic (mainly between Latvia and Russia) – increased by 15.7%.

In the 1st half of 2010 63.3 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is a decrease of 17.1% compared to the 1st half of the previous year. The majority (99.7%) of passengers carried by regular bus traffic lines were carried by national bus traffic lines where, compared to January-June 2009, the number of passengers has reduced by 17%, but the number of passengers carried by international bus traffic lines – by 23.4%.
