Indicators of port and airport activities in the 9 months of 2007

The volume of cargo reloaded at the ports of Latvia in the 9 months of 2007 has increased compared to the same period of 2006, according to data of Central Statistical Bureau. The volume of cargo reloaded at the ports of Latvia in January - September 2007 was 47.2 mln tons, an increase of 4.1 % compared to the 9 months of 2006.

41.4 mln tons of cargos were loaded at ports, an increase of 1.7 % compared to January – September 2006. The volume of mineral fertilisers loaded has increased. Compared to the same period of 2006, in the 9 months of 2007, mineral fertilisers loaded increased by 14.7%, comprising 4 mln tons. Compared to January-September 2006, in the same period of 2007 the volume of crude oil loaded at ports has increased 1.5 times, reaching 1 mln ton. The volume of oil products loaded at ports comprised 16.2 mln tons, an increase of 4.6 % compared to January – September 2006. 3.6 mln tons of timber was loaded at ports in the 9 months of 2007, an increase of 2.8 % compared to January – September 2006. The volume of coal loaded in the 9 months of this year was 10.4 mln tons, an increase of 9.3 % compared to January – September 2006.

The volume of cargo unloaded at ports in the 9 months of 2007 has increased. In January – September 2007, 5.8 mln tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at ports, what is more by 25.7% than in 9 months of 2006. Cargo in containers accounted for the bulk of cargo unloaded: 1 mln ton. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased by 22.1 %, in comparison with January-September 2006. In the 9 months of 2007 the volume of roll on/roll off cargoes unloaded at ports was 0.8 mln tons. The volume of this kind of cargo was an increase of 15.7 % compared to the corresponding period of 2006. The volume of unloaded crude oil has increased, in the 9 months of 2007 constituting 0.8 mln tons, an increase of 36% of January – September 2006. Compared to January-September 2006, in the corresponding period of 2007 also the volume of construction materials unloaded at ports has increased by 29.5%, reaching 0.8 mln tons. But the volume of sugar unloaded at ports in turn, decreased by 38.4 %.

In January – September 2007, 23.9 mln tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils, an increase of 8.6%, compared to the corresponding period of 2006. The volume of cargo loaded at the port of Ventspils has increased by 7.2 % comprising 21.5 mln tons. The volume of potassium salt loaded in the 9 months of 2007 at the port of Ventspils has increased, and it constituted 2.6 mln tons – up by 2.5 %, compared to the relevant period of the previous year. The volume of crude oil and oil products loaded and unloaded has increased, reaching 0.9 and 12.4 mln tons, respectively. The volume of crude oil loaded has increased 1.6 times, but the volume of oil products has increased by 7.1%. In the 9 months of 2007 the volume of roll on/roll off cargo loaded has decreased by 12.4 %, comprising 0.7 mln tons. In the 9 months of 2007, the volume of cargos unloaded in the port of Ventspils has grown by 21.9%. Compared to 9 months of 2006, the volume of roll on/roll off cargo unloaded have increased by 4.5 %. As well as the volume of crude oil unloaded has grown by 35.7 % and the volume of unloaded oil products has grown by 34.6%. Compared to the corresponding period of 2006, in the 9 months of 2007, the volume of unloaded sugar in the port of Ventspils has dropped down by 28 %.

Cargo turnover at the port of Riga in January-September 2007 was 19.3 mln tons, down by 1 % on the 9 months of 2006. 16.7 mln tons of cargo was loaded at the port of Riga, a decrease of 4.5 % compared to January-September 2006. Coal (7.4 mln tons, a decrease of 13.2 % in comparison to 9 months of 2006) accounted for the bulk of cargo loaded at the port of Riga. The volume of timber loaded in the 9 months of this year was 2,3 mln tons, an increase of 1,8 % compared to January – September 2006. In the nine months of 2007, 3.4 mln tons of oil products were loaded at the port of Riga, 2.5 % up on the nine months of 2006. The volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Riga in the 9 months of 2007 has increased. 2.6 mln tons of cargo were unloaded at the port of Riga, 29.3 % up on the six months of the previous year. Cargo in containers accounted for the bulk of cargo unloaded at the port of Riga. 0.9 mln tons of cargo were unloaded at the port of Riga, 24 % up on the nine months of the previous year. The volume of construction materials unloaded at the port of Riga has increased by 1.2%, reaching 0.5 mln tons.

The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the port of Liepāja has decreased. Cargo turnover at the port of Liepāja in the 9 months of 2007 was 2.9 mln tons, a decrease of 2.4 % compared with the corresponding period of 2006. 2.3 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Liepāja, a decrease of 8.5 % compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Compared to 9 months of 2006, the volume of grain and grain products loaded in the port of Liepāja has increased 1.6 times. By contrast, there were the following decreases in the volumes of other cargo loaded: 34.2% for oil products, 14.7% for timber, 10.7% for ferrous metals and articles of ferrous metals. The volume of cargo unloaded in the nine months of 2007 at the port of Liepāja increased noticeably, reaching 0.6 mln tons, up by 31.1 % compared to January-September 2006. The volume of grain and grain products represented the bulk of cargo unloaded at the port of Liepāja. The volume of this cargo unloaded has decreased by 0.9 %, in comparison to the corresponding period of 2006. The increase of the cargos unloaded was determined also by the increase of the construction materials unloaded, what in the 9 months of 2007 comprised 0.1 mln tons- 3 times more than last year.

Cargo turnover at the minor ports in the nine months of 2007 has increased. In the nine months of 2007 the volume of loaded and unloaded cargoes at the minor ports comprised 1.1 mln tons, up by 30.6 % compared to 2006. Cargoes loaded accounted for the bulk (84.1 %) of cargo turnover at the minor ports; of these, timber cargo constituted 0.6 mln tons, woodchips cargo- 0.2 mln tons.

Passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” is still growing rapidly. There were 2367.7 thsd passenger arrivals at and departures from the airport in the 9 months of 2007, an increase of 26.5% compared to January-September 2006. The number of passengers using the services of both the Latvian and foreign airlines has increased. In the nine months of 2007, 1188.2 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” on the aircraft of the Latvian airlines, an increase of 41.3% compared to the 9 months of the previous year. The number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” in the 9 months of 2007 by the aircraft of foreign airlines was 1179.5 thsd, an increase of 14.4% on the corresponding period of the previous year.

In the 9 months of 2007 the number of passengers at the passenger port of Riga has increased. In January-September 2007, 368 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the port, 1.9 times more compared to the 9 months of 2006.
