Indicators of port and airport activities in the 9 months of 2006

The volume of cargo reloaded at the ports of Latvia in the 9 months of 2006 has slightly increased in comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau. Cargo turnover at ports in January-September 2006 was 45.3 mln tons, an increase of 1% compared to the 9 months of 2005.

40.7 mln tons of cargo were loaded at ports in the 9 months of 2006, down by 2.9% on the 9 months of 2005. In January-September 2006 11.5 mln tons of coal were loaded at ports, an increase of 0.8% compared to the nine months of 2005. The volume of crude oil and oil products loaded at ports in January, an increase of 1.8 times on the corresponding period of 2005. The volume of oil products loaded at ports in the 9 months of 2006 was 15.4 mln tons, up by 0.5% on January-September 2005. 3.5 mln tons of timber were loaded at ports in the nine months of 2005, a decrease of 22.1% on the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume of mineral fertilisers loaded at ports has likewise decreased notably reaching 3.5 mln tons, down by 28.5% in comparison with the corresponding period of 2005.

The volume of cargo unloadedat ports in the 9 months of 2006 increased substantially and represented 4.6 mln tons, an increase of 58% on the nine months of 2005. Cargo in containers (0.8 mln tons) accounted for the bulk of cargo unloaded. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased by 14.3% in comparison with January-September 2005. In the 9 months of 2006 the volume of roll on/roll off cargoes unloaded at ports was 0.7 mln tons, an increase of 25.2% on the three quarters of 2005. In the 9 months of 2006, 0.5 mln tons of sugar were unloaded at ports, 1.7 times more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume of grain and grain products unloaded at ports in the 9 months of 2006 rose 1.8 times in comparison with January-September of the previous year.

22 mln tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils in January-September 2006, a decrease of 1.4% in comparison with the corresponding period of 2005. The volume of cargo loaded at the port of Ventspils in the nine months of 2006 decreased by 8% and was 20 mln tons. There has been a substantial decrease in the volume of potassium salt loaded in the 9 months of 2006 at the port of Ventspils (2.5 mln tons, down by 33.7% on the nine months of the previous year). The volume of oil products loaded reached 11.5 mln tons, down by 9.2% on January-September 2005. The volume of coal loaded at the port of Ventspils also decreased slightly to 3 mln tons, a decrease of 12.9% compared to the three quarters of 2005. Due to the change of the location of the ship agents` activities from the port of Liepāja to the port of Ventspils, the volume of roll on/roll off cargo loaded has increased 7.6 times. The volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Ventspils increased in January-September 2006 3.7 times and was 2 mln tons. Compared to the 9 months of 2005, the volume of roll on/roll off cargo unloaded has increased 8.1 times but the volume of cargo in containers unloaded increased 20.3 times. The volume of sugar unloaded in January-September 2006 rose 1.7 times in comparison with the nine months of the previous year.

Cargo turnover at the port of Riga in January-September 2006 was 19.5 mln tons, up by 6.6% on the 9 months of 2005. 17.5 mln tons of cargo was loaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 5.4% compared to January-September of the previous year. Coal (8.5 mln tons; an increase of 7.1% in comparison to January-September 2005) accounted for the bulk of cargo loaded at the port of Riga. The volume of timber loaded was 2.2 mln tons, a decrease of 24.9% compared to the corresponding period of 2005. 3.3 mln tons of oil products were loaded at the port of Riga, 39.3% up on the nine months of 2005. 2 mln tons of cargo were unloaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 18.3% on the nine months of the previous year. Cargo in containers represented the bulk of cargo unloaded at the port of Riga. In the 9 months of 2006, 0.7 mln tons of cargo in containers were unloaded at the port of Riga, an increase of 5.5% compared to January-September 2005. The volume of construction materials unloaded at the port of Riga was 0.5 mln tons, double the amount in comparison to the 9 months of the previous year and the volume of sugar unloaded was 0.2 mln tons, 1.6 times more than in January-September 2005.

The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the port of Liepāja has decreased. This was partly influenced by the change of location of the ship agent’s activities from the port of Liepāja to the port of Ventspils. Cargo turnover at the port of Liepāja in the 9 months of 2006 was 3 mln tons, a decrease of 10.1% compared with the corresponding period of 2005. In January-September 2006 2.5 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port of Liepāja, a decrease of 8.7% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Oil products (increase 2.1 times) represented the bulk of cargoes loaded at the port of Liepāja. By contrast, there were the following decreases in the volumes of other cargo loaded: 1.8% for ferrous metals and articles of ferrous metals, 28.7% for timber and 16.7% for grain and grain products. The volume of cargo unloaded in the 9 months of 2006 at the port of Liepāja reached 0.5 mln tons, down by 17.2% compared to January-September 2005. Grain and grain products represented the bulk of cargo unloaded at the port of Liepāja. The volume of this cargo unloaded has increased 1.9 times.

Kravu apgrozība mazajās ostās 2006.gada deviņos mēnešos, salīdzinot ar iepriekšējā gada janvāri-septembri, ir samazinājusies. 2006.gada 9 mēnešos nosūtīto un saņemto kravu apjoms mazajās ostās bija 0.8 milj. t, kas ir par 11.4% mazāk nekā 2005.gada attiecīgajā periodā. Lielāko daļu (81.3%) kravu apgrozības mazajās ostās veidoja nosūtītās kravas, no kurām 0.5 milj. t bija kokmateriāli.

Cargo turnover at the minor ports in the nine months of 2006 has decreased in comparison with January-June of the previous year. The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the minor ports in the 9 months of 2006 was 0.8 mln tons, down by 11.4% compared to the corresponding period of 2005. Cargoes loaded accounted for the bulk (81.3%) of cargo turnover at the minor ports; of these, timber constituted 0.5 mln tons.

Passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” isstillgrowing rapidly. There were 1871.8 thsd passenger arrivals at and departures from the airport in the 9 months of 2006, an increase of 36.1% compared to January-September 2005. The number of passengers using the services of both the Latvian and foreign airlines has increased. In the nine months of 2006, 840.8 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” on the aircraft of the Latvian airlines, an increase of 30.8% compared to the 9 months of the previous year. The number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” by the aircraft of foreign airlines was1031 thsd, an increase of 40.6% on the corresponding period of the previous year. The largest passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” in the 9 months of 2006 was ensured by the British airports (343.1 thsd passengers, an increase of 1.6 times compared to the corresponding period of 2005). Passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” from the German airports has decreased slightly, by 1.9%, and represented 281.3 thsd passengers. There is still a high passenger turnover with the Irish airports. In the 9 months of 2006 passenger turnover with these airports totalled 144.5 thsd passengers.

Despite the fact that passenger turnover at the passenger port of Riga in the 1st quarter of 2006 decreased rapidly, total passenger turnover in 9 month has increased thanks to the renewal of ferry traffic with Sweden in the 2nd quarter of 2006. In the nine months of 2006 201 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the passenger port of Riga, an increase of 9.3% compared to the 9 months of 2005.
