Indicators of port and airport activities in the 3rd quarter of 2012
Data of the Central Statistical Bureau show that, in comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year, cargo turnover at Latvian ports in the 3rd quarter of 2012 has increased by 7.2% and comprise 17.7 million tons. Increase was recorded in volume of both cargo loaded and unloaded, still higher rise was observed in volume of cargo loaded – of 7.6%, whereas volume of cargo unloaded comprised 4.3% more than in previous year.
Traditionally oil products (33.1%) and coal (33.1%) form the highest share of the cargo loaded, whereas largest share of cargo unloaded is comprised by cargo in containers (23.9%), roll on/roll off cargo (17.6%), and oil products (14.3%).
Cargo turnover at Latvian ports, million tons
Nevertheless at all large and minor Latvian ports a stable rise in the cargo turnover was observed, the most notable increase was recorded at the port of Liepaja – 1.6 times. In comparison with the corresponding time period of the previous year, turnover of general cargo at the Port of Liepaja has gown significantly – 1.8 times, of which turnover of roll on/roll off cargo – 2.1 times, whereas turnover of ferrous metals and articles thereof rose 6.7 times. Volume of cargo in bulk has grown 1.6 times, of which cereals and cereal products - 2.1 times.
Cargo turnover at the port of Ventspils in the 3rd quarter of 2012 constituted 7 million tons, and this is a rise of 4.3%, in comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2011. Volume of cargo loaded increased by 7.4% and comprised 6.5 million tons. Data show that only at the Port of Ventispils a reduction in the cargo loaded (comprising 25.4%) was recorded.
As compared to the 3rd quarter of 2011, cargo turnover at Riga port in the 3rd quarter of 2012 increased by 3% and reached 8.6 million tons. 7.2 million tons of cargo were loaded - an increase of 0.8%, whereas 1.4 million tons or 16.2% more were unloaded, if compared to July – September of the previous year.
Cargo turnover at minor ports in the 3rd quarter of 2012 constituted 0.3 million tons, and this is a decrease of 7.6% if compared to the 3rd quarter of 2011.
In the 3rd quarter of 2012, turnover of passengers carried by ferries at the Passenger Port of Riga comprised 233.2 thousand persons. If compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, decrease constitutes 0.5%. In its turn, 55.1 thousand transit passengers at the Riga Passenger Port were carried by passenger cruise vessels -32.3% more than in the 3rd quarter of previous year.
In the 3rd quarter of 2012, the number of passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport decreased by 8.9%, if compared to the same period of the previous year. In respect to passenger turnover, foreign companies have been more successful, if compared to Latvian airlines. Number of passengers carried by foreign airlines has grown by 0.5%, opposite to 13% decrease in Latvian airlines. Thus also the share of passengers carried by Latvian airlines in Riga International Airport is continuously reducing and comprises 66.4% or 3.2% less than last year.
