Indicators of port and airport activities in the 3rd quarter of 2011

Cargo turnover at Latvian ports in the 3rd quarter of 2011 comprised 16.6 million tons, which is 13.7% more than in the 3rd quarter of 2010, according to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau.

In the 3rd quarter of 2011 the amount of loaded cargo at Latvian ports reached 14.4 million tons, which is 9.7% more than in July – September 2010.

The volume of oil products loaded at ports in the 3rd quarter of 2011 comprised 4.9 million tons – 16.9 % more than in the 3rd quarter of 2010, and the volume of coal loaded constituted 4.8 million tons – an increase of 43.7 %.  The volume of roll on/roll off cargo loaded at ports in Latvia increased by 21.7% and reached 0.4 million tons. The volume of other main loaded cargo has declined: timber (1.2 million tons) by 26.9 % and mineral fertilisers (1 million tons) – by 2%.

In July - September 2011 the volume of cargo unloaded at the ports of Latvia comprised 2.2 million tons, and it is 48.7% more as compared to July - September 2010.

Cargo in containers forms the major part of the unloaded cargo: 0.5 million tons – 18.4% more than in the 3rd quarter of 2010, construction materials: 0.4 million tons or 1.7 times more, as well as roll on/roll off cargo (0.4 mln. tons) - an increase of 25.8%. A new type of cargo received has emerged: coal, the volume of which in the 3rd quarter of 2011 reached 0.3 million tons.

As compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010, the cargo turnover at Riga port in the 3rd quarter of 2011 increased by 7.8% and comprised 8.4 million tons. 7.2 million tons of cargo were loaded at the port, which is 5.7% more than in July - September 2010, whereas 1.2 million tons were unloaded - an increase of 22.6%

In the 3rd quarter of 2011, 6.7 million tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils - 26.4% more than in the 3rd quarter of 2010. The volume of cargo loaded grew by 22.1% and comprised 6.1 million tons; in its turn, the volume of cargo unloaded increased 1.9 times.

Cargo turnover at the port of Liepaja in the 3rd quarter of 2011 constituted 1.2 million tons, and it is a rise of 6.7%, as compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010. 0.8 mln tons of cargo were loaded at the port, which is a decrease of 14.3% as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The volume of unloaded cargo at the port grew 2.2 times.

The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the minor ports in the 3rd quarter of 2011 comprised 0.3 million tons, a decrease of 19.1%, if compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010.

In July - September 2011, there were 317.5 thousand passenger arrivals and departures at Riga Passenger Port, which is an increase of 8.7% as compared to July – September, 2010.

In the 3rd quarter of 2011 passenger turnover at the port of Ventspils comprised 19.5 thousand, but at the port of Liepaja – 5.8 thousand passengers.

In the 3rd quarter of 2011, 1.6 million passengers arrived and departed from Riga International Airport, comprising an increase of 7% as compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010.

In the 3rd quarter of 2011, 1.1 million passengers chose Latvian airlines for arriving and departing from Riga International Airport, which is an increase of 8.1 % as compared to the respective period of the previous year. In its turn, 0.5 million passengers used foreign airlines and it is 4.5% more, in comparison to the corresponding period of the previous year.

In the 3rd quarter of 2011, the largest passenger turnover at Riga International Airport was with airports in Germany – 175 thousand passengers (a decrease of 7.7%), with airports in Great Britain – 168 thousand passengers (an increase of 5.1%) and with airports in Finland – 146 thousand passengers, which is an increase of 16.6% as compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010.
