Indicators of port and airport activities in the 2nd quarter of 2012

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau show that cargo turnover at the Latvian ports, in the 2nd quarter of 2012, comprised 20.3 million tons – an increase of 12.2% on the 2nd quarter of 2011.

Cargo turnover at Latvian ports, million tons

In the 2nd quarter of 2012, the amount of cargo loaded at the Latvian ports constituted 17.7 million tons, 10% more than in the April - June 2011. Due to the great demand in the world market, oil products accounted for more than one third (35.3%) of the loaded cargo, followed by coal – 33.8%.

In April - June 2012 the volume of cargo unloaded at the Latvian ports comprised 2.6 million tons, and it is 30.1% more if compared to the April - June 2011. One fifth (20.2%) of the unloaded cargo constituted cargo in containers, followed by roll on/roll off cargo (14.3%) and oil products (12%).

As compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011, cargo turnover at the Rigaport, in the 2nd quarter of 2012, increased by 1.9% and reached 9.3 million tons. 7.9 million tons of cargo were loaded at the port - a decrease of 1.8% on the April - June 2011, whereas 1.4 million tons were unloaded - 28.7% more as compared to the mentioned period.

Cargo turnover at the port of Ventspils, in the 2nd quarter of 2012, constituted 8.8 million tons, and this is a rise of 20% in comparison with the 2nd quarter of 2011. The volume of cargos loaded grew by 19.2% and comprised 8.2 million tons, while the volume of cargos unloaded increased by 31%.

In the 2nd quarter of 2012, cargo turnover at the port of Liepaja accounted for 1.8 million tons – 1.5 times more on the 2nd quarter of 2011. The volume of loaded cargo reached 1.4 million tons, and it is 1.7 times more than during the corresponding period of the previous year. Whereas the volume of cargo unloaded has increased by 28.1%.

Cargo turnover at minor ports, in the 2nd quarter of 2012, comprised 0.4 million tons, and it is a decrease of 14.7%, if compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011.

In the 2nd quarter of 2012, 201.4 thousand passengers were carried by ferries at the Riga Passenger Port, a growth of 3.6% as compared to April - June 2011. In its turn, 22.9 thousand transit passengers at the Riga Passenger Port were carried by passenger cruise vessels - 45.4% more than in the 2nd quarter of 2011. Passenger turnover at the port of Ventspils comprised 15.5 thousand passengers – a rise of 9.8% on the corresponding period of the previous year, whereas at the port of Liepaja – 7.1 thousand passengers (increase of 43%).

In the 2nd quarter of 2012, 1291.9 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from theRiga International Airport, comprising a decrease of 10.6% on the 2nd quarter of 2011.

The largest passenger turnover at the Riga International Airport, in the 1st quarter of 2012, was with the airports of Germany – 171.7 thousand passengers (rise of 4.3% on the 2nd quarter of 2011), with the airports of United Kingdom – 128.4 thousand passengers (decrease of 15.4%), and with the airports of Russia – 119.5 thousand passengers (growth of 13.5%).
