Indicators of port and airport activities in 2009

According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau, cargo turnover at ports in 2009 reached 62 mln tons, which is 2.6 % less if compared to 2008.

In 2009 57.6 mln tons of cargos were loaded at the ports, which is less by 0.2 % than in 2008.

The volume of oil products loaded at ports has increased, which in 2009 was 22 mln tons – more by 7.9% than in 2008. Volume of coal loaded comprised 19.2 mln tons – up by 4.8% compared to 2008, volume of grain and grain products loaded – 2.3 mln tons which is more by 10.2% than in 2008. The volume of other main cargo loaded has decreased. 3.4 mln tons of timber were loaded at ports which is less by 5.8 % if compared to 2008 and 3 mln tons of mineral fertilisers were loaded at ports which is a decrease of 33.2 %.

In 2009 4.4 mln tons of cargos were unloaded at ports, which is less by 26.4 % than in 2008.

Oil products and cargo in containers represented the bulk of cargo unloaded: 1 mln tons and 0.9 mln tons. The volume of unloaded oil products grew 1.7 times if compared to 2008. In its turn, the volume of other main cargo loaded reduced: cargos in containers – by 27.1 %, roll on/roll off cargos – by 13.8 %, construction materials – by 61 %.

2009. In 2008 26.7 mln tons of cargos were loaded and unloaded at the port of Ventspils, which is less by 6.8 % than in 2007. The volume of cargo loaded dropped by 4.4 % and comprised 25.2 mln tons, but the volume of cargo unloaded reduced by 35.3 %.

If compared to 2008, in 2009 the cargo turnover at the port of Riga has increased by 0.5 % and reached 29.7 mln tons. 27.3 mln tons of cargos were loaded at the port of Riga, which is 3.4 % more than in the previous year. In its turn, the volume of cargo unloaded at the port of Riga decreased and comprised 2.4 mln tons – less by 23.6% than in previous year.

Volume of cargo reloaded at the port of Liepaja in 2009, compared to previous year, has increased.Cargo turnover at the port of Liepaja in 2009 was 4.4 mln tons, which is more by 4.6 % than in 2008. 3.8 mln tons of cargos were loaded at the port of Liepaja, a growth of 7.2 % if compared to previous year. But the volume of cargo unloaded at the port has dropped by 10.4%.

In comparison with the previous year, cargo turnover at the minor ports in 2009 has decreased. The volume of cargos loaded and unloaded at the minor ports was 1.2 mln tons, a drop of 6.9 % if compared to 2008.

The passenger turnover at the passenger port of Riga in 2009 has increased.There were 691.2 thsd passenger arrivals at and departures from the port, an increase of 37.3 % if compared to 2008.

In 2009 passenger turnover at the port of Ventspils was 15 thsd passengers, but at the port of Liepaja – 20 thsd passengers.


Passenger turnover at the airport “Rīga” continues to grow. There were 4064.8 mln passenger arrivals at and departures from the airport in 2009, an increase of 10.1 % if compared to 2008.

In 2009 2734.2 thsd passengers using Latvian airlines arrived at and departed from the airport „Rīga” which is an increase of 28 % if compared to the previous year. However 1330.6 thsd passengers arrived at and departed from the airport “Rīga” using foreign airlines which is a decrease of 14.5 % if compared to previous year.

The largest passenger turnover at the airport „Rīga” in 2009 was with the airports of Germany – 574.4 thsd passengers, which is more by 4.4 % if compared to 2008, with the airports of Great Britain – 458.1 thsd passengers – a decrease of 1.4 % and with the airports of Finland – 286.6 thsd passengers, increase of 19.3 % if compared with 2008.
